Anyone know the history of the scoreboard tiger?

Oct 10, 2019, 7:11 PM

I like the tiger and how they have kept it. Would it be time for the tiger to get an upgrade as well, or is it off limits as long as they put him back on his perch

I know there’s an article somewhere. Scott_Rhymer® might be a good guy to ask.

Ask Coach Howard (or Hartins), they probably bought it!

Oct 10, 2019, 7:45 PM

Goes back to Frank's earlier days, I'm sure.

For some reason I'm thinking 1956.
Speaking of 1956, I think I went to a NC State game at Clemson that year a player, #### Christie ran the opening KO back for a TD and I think that was the margin of victory for the wolfies Years later Christie was killed in an auto accident.

It was there in the early 80s when I was at Clemson. Of course then the scoreboard was much smaller, so it played a prominent part. But now it is so insignificant, I think it is time to retire it. Put it in storage with the old Clemson House sign.

Its not going anywhere. It’s tradition and in the last scoreboard update a few years back, Clemson FB Twitter said as much. Trying to find it.

Let me put it this way. The video screen attached to the tiger is getting upgraded. Think of it as the tiger is fixed and his surroundings are changed with the times.

I loved it as a kid when the eyes lit up and the tail wagged. My kids loved it as well. I'm really ok one way or another.

There were several years when he was up there but the glowing eyes and tail weren’t functional.

Thankfully that has been addressed.

I would also like to point out that the Augusta National still maintains it's manual leader boards. Do not mess with tradition. The tiger, the rock, the hill ARE Clemson football.

Frank Howard made a trip back to Alabama one summer to visit some family and stopped by a neighborhood yard sale Saturday morning. Howard noticed a crazy looking electonic tiger sitting in the guy's garage and asked "what's that?" The fellow said he and a couple of his Bama buddies who despised Auburn had driven down to Auburn and stolen it out of their football stadium one night. Howard seemed concerned and started telling the fellow how much trouble he'd be in if the police found him with the stolen tiger and Howard agreed to help him get rid of it. So he and the man carried it out to the street and put it in the back of Howard's truck. By the time opening game rolled around, that tiger was all lit up wagging its tail in its new home.

Im younger and my opinion doesn’t carry any weight

Oct 10, 2019, 9:38 PM

But as much as I respect the old tiger and it’s tradition, I would love to see a bigger and more current looking tiger in the stadium with current technology and graphics.
I love the idea of the light up eyes and wagging tail, but I also know that we could have a more professional and contemporary look.

I would be ok with him being moved to one of the smaller video boards or another place of honor. And to pay homage to him when we score having a large animated tiger on the new board have lit up eyes and wagging his tail

I would move it to somewhere else in the stadium. Just my opinion.***
