Flashing back to the Tennessee national championship.

Dec 30, 2020, 4:09 PM

This was the game where Tee Martin was the QB and FSU, without Chris Weinke who was injured, was the opposition.

Don't remember the exact details, but the Tennessee coach who was the OC and called plays was no longer with the team. (Took another job.) Nole fans, including me, were thinking it gave us a big advantage. Young guy, very inexperienced, never called plays before, was the one sitting in the press box calling plays for the Vols. "The pressure will get to him. He'll make mistakes. He's not qualified."

Final Score: Tennessee 23, FSU 16.

As Aaron Rogers said a few years ago, "R E L A X."

Watson was out. Stoudt was QB after a tough season. Chad Morris has just left for SMU.

Final: Clemson 40 OU 6

Tennessee in that game went on to fame and fortune, his name was Randy Sanders. (OC David Cutcliffe had already left to take the head coaching job at Ole Miss.) Since he did enough in that one game to win Fat Phil a Natty, they made him OC for the next seven years.

He is currently head coach at...... East Tennessee State. Not exactly the Big Time. But, he won the one Big One when he had the chance.

Pretty sure he was the QB coach for Jamies

During their title runs a few years back as well. Also did a fine job at Kentucky.

I remember his name was Randy Sanders. I had forgotten it was Cutcliffe who left to go to Ole Miss. Thanks for the input.

Yes, he was the "QB coach" at FSU when Winston was there. But, I assure you, Jimbo Fisher was the QB coach when it came to coaching whoever the starter was. Sanders may have monitored the QBs during individual drills, but anytime they were in groups (7 on 7, 11 on 11, 5 on air, etc.) Jimbo was the guy coaching the QB.

Yes. He signed with FSU on signing day. But, he was also a highly thought of baseball player. He was drafted and signed with MLB. Got a nice bonus. Took the bonus and invested it wisely in real estate.

Bobby told him that if things didn't work out he always had a scholarship waiting for him. After a few years (aroound 5) in the minors he called Bobby up and asked if the offer was still good.

While at FSU the joke among his teammates was he was the only player on the team who subscribed to the Wall Street Journal and read it every day with his morning coffee.

Note: FSU lost another highly recruited QB a few years later: Joe Mauer. Went on to a pretty good, wink-wink, career in the majors.
