All jokes aside, please pray for all those in the path of

Hurricane Dorian. It got back to being a Cat 3 last night. Trust me, a few miles an hour more wind speed might not sound like much, but it can make a huge difference in the amount of damage. If you want physical proof, just drive into Holly Hill, SC on Highway 15 from I-26. You will drive through what in 1989 was a pine forest. Hurricane Hugo turned it into so many match sticks that the damage IS STILL VISIBLE TODAY, THIRTY YEARS LATER! Hugo was a Cat 4/5 when it hit the SC coast. Dorian is not in that range, but still is a bad storm. I pray that all in its path, including me 85 miles inland, will be spared loss of life and property. Amen.

Wind pressures are propotional to the square of the wind

Sep 5, 2019, 11:22 AM

speed

If 70 mph winds is a baseline

A 100 mph wind is twice as strong (100^2/70^2=2.04)

A 120 mph wind is 3 times as strong as a 70 mph wind

A 150 mph wind is 4-1/2 times as strong as a 70 mph wind

Imagine driving down the highway traveling at 100 mph in the back of a pickup truck holding up a piece of 4'x8' plywood. It is a lot of force.

Structural Engineers never ride out hurricanes.
