All Time Native South Carolinian Team
Jul 7, 2018, 6:04 PM
|

Feel good about the Notre Dame guy from Woodruff that played for Holtz at QB. Clowney at DE. Bennie Cunningham at TE. Swearinton (sp?) at DB. George Webster LB at Michigan St. Banks McFadden., both Perry brothers at DL. Who else? The good ones that I recall are Steve Greer Guard at GA, Jerry Butler at Receiver, Steve Fuller, Freddie Solomon (think he played at Tampa?), Bennie Galloway, Wayne Mass, Connie Wade ( who didn’t pan out), Mike Fair, Kent Lawrence at GA, King Dixon. I know I have left a ton off. What is interesting is the lack of offensive linemen we have produced.
Your thoughts?

I would have to include Stanley Morgan (Easley,Tennessee, New England) on an all-time Native South Carolinian team.

Tony Rice played on successful teams at ND, but Steve Fuller was at least as good, if not better.

Was Harry Carson and or Donnie Shell from SC? How about Deacon Jones? Jim Youngblood Tennessee Tech, I think, from Jonesville. Jarvis Redwine?

Brown (DE) from Alvin were two of the best I saw and had long careers in NFL. Burris was a first rd pick and Brown was first overall pick in 2000.

Troy Brown Best Ever
Jul 7, 2018, 8:44 PM

Best ever, possibly Troy Brown from Blackville, SC, Marshall U. and 15 years on NE Patriots. 5 Super Bowls, 3 victories. All time leading Pats receiver when he retired. Elected to the Pats hall of fame.

You absolutely would NOT take Troy Brown over Nuk, AJ Green or Freddie Solomon... the Pats WR HOF members didn't even make a lot of pro bowls or all pro teams... the patriots have only been relevant for as long as bellicheck has been the coach, before then, they were no more significant than the buccaneers... c'mon man!! LOL

All fine receivers, but I'll repeat Troy Brown played in 5 Super Bowls, 3 winners over 15 years. AJ Green may play longer and better, but he's not there yet. Brown besides being a great receiver also was one of the best punt returners, kick off returners in the league. Heck he even played defense when needed and was the emergency QB.

From Wiki: In addition to playing offense and defense with success, Brown is the Patriots' all-time leading punt returner with 252 returns for 2,625 yards and 3 touchdowns. He is second all-time in Patriots history in receptions (557) and third all-time in receiving yards (6,366). He still holds the Super Bowl record for most punt returns in a career with 8. Brown is the only player in NFL history with at least 550 receptions, 250 punt returns, and an interception.

Those make a great case for an all purpose choice
Jul 8, 2018, 7:08 PM
|
|
But as a receiver, AJ Green has already surpassed Brown's receiving totals... in SEVEN seasons: 8200 yds, and Nuk will surpass him NEXT SEASON in receiving yards, and Green and Nuk have already bested Brown's best single season in yards and both have already scored more touchdowns. Brown would make a great all purpose choice, but as a receiver, he's top 10 but not even top 5...

Going back a ways - Buddy Gore from Georgetown - first RB at Clemson to have a 1000 yard season I think - and Jimmy Orr - wide receiver and Pro Bowler from Seneca.

How can we all forget our Ben Boulware from Anderson. And for Oline I think Dalton Freeman was a really good center from us from Pelion SC (right down the road from me).
Granted neither of these guys did much in the NFL, they were pretty darn good Clemson players.

Mike Williams is also from SC. But it'd be hard to take him over AJ Green and Nuk since he has yet to play and NFL yet.
