7 years ago I turned 50 and had a colonoscopy

1

Jan 10, 2020, 5:53 AM

because the doc said it was recommended at 50.

They found cancer. No family history, no increased risk. I had surgery to remove about a foot of my colon and nothing more. It was caught early.

If I would have waited for symptoms, I likely would not be here today, or if I was, it would have been through fighting for my life with chemo and radiation.

If you wait for symptoms, that only show up in later stages of colon cancer, then you have got trouble.

About 1 in 20 will get colon or rectal cancer.

It is the second most deadly cancer.

It starts with pre-cancerous polyps that take 10 years to grow into cancer. You get them snipped out before they turn to cancer or in my case you find cancer before it has a chance to grow and cause problems.

Colon cancer might be the most preventable cancer out there even though its the second deadliest.

I have colonoscopy #5 coming up. Doesn't bother me one bit.

Outstanding post, Neal in NC! At age 50 I had a sigmoidoscopy and they found a polyp which was followed very quickly with a colonoscopy where they found 3 polyps. (My Mom died from colon cancer). I just had my 11th colonoscopy recently and they found no polyps. My doctor, a Clemson grad, said that he would see me in 5 years. At age 81, I said "I sure as hell hope so."

One of my best friends recently went in for a colonoscopy, after his girlfriend pestered him into a physical because he was feeling tired all the time. Turns out his red blood cell count was about 1/3 what it should have been. Colonoscopy revealed cancer which was removed and he is clear now. On a ridiculous side note, he went in for the colonoscopy, was released the following morning (they kept him for blood transfusions) and the bill was in their mailbox the next day when they got home.

Anyway. Don’t avoid it! Great post!

When I was 47, my doctor recommended that I have a colonoscopy because of family history. It's not a pleasant thought. Well you guessed it, there were polyps and pre-cancerous polyps found and removed. I had a 2nd one 7 years later and more polyps and after the 3rd one nothing found. Get it done!

Great post. I would add that the process isn't NEARLY as uncomfortable as you might think. The jokes are funny, but it is all hyperbole. There is no good reason not to do it.

I had mine two years ago at 50, and thankfully, nothing serious was found.

The procedure itself is nothing, since you're sedated the whole time. The prepwork 24 hours ahead of time, however, is...not fun.

I dunno, I thought it was pretty bad.

I will say, though, that I started at a slight disadvantage - I forgot to mix the "drink" the night before, so it wasn't cold when it came time to drink it. It would have gone down much better cold.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is truly nothing to it.

Jan 11, 2020, 8:19 PM [ in reply to Re: 7 years ago I turned 50 and had a colonoscopy ]

To me, the worst part is not being able to drink coffee the morning of the procedure-- that's just barbaric!

The rest of it is nothing. With the new anesthesia (propyphol) there's not even an anesthesia "hangover."

Get 'er done! Take a short nap, wake up and drop in to BoJangles and have a sausage biscuit-- conscience-free!

Brothers and sisters of Clemson. I love you all! Go get the colonoscopy done. This is one of the easiest cancers to beat. It takes 48 hours from prep to finish. The doctors have the prep now where it is easy. The piece of mind for you and your family is worth it. My family has a history of colon cancer so I had my first done at 40. They have found polyps for the first 4 with the scopes every year. I have finally gotten to the point the doctor sees me every 3 years (I'm 62 now). Please get the scope done. Love you all! Go Tigers (in more ways than one).

If you are relatively young and kind of skimming over this post, not giving it much thought... Please pay attention. I have a family history and I haven't turned 40 yet, I'm 39. But I called the Endoscopy Center and had them check my insurance just to see if they would approve it and they did. Colonoscopy itself is literally has zero on the big deal scale. The prep kind of sucks but who cares it's just one day. My doctor found one benign polyp, but it was shaped like a mushroom and funky looking and it probably would have eventually turned into cancer.

I eat very healthy, have a ton of fiber in my diet, and I exercise regularly. None of that stuff matters if you have a genetic predisposition to getting polyps. Regardless of your situation, don't wait until you have symptoms. Get a colonoscopy

Let me add my loud AMEN !!!!!!

My son-in-law is a GI specialist (now retired). With his suggestion I had the procedure many times over the years. One of his partners always did my procedure. I was a bit apprehensive before my first one because I had heard it was pure agony. Much to my delight, I had no trouble whatsoever. The worst part was drinking that barrel of gut cleanser. Even the taste of that gut cleanser has improved over the years.

I hope all of you can be as fortunate as I in reaching No. 98. If you will follow the advice of the posters in this thread, your odds of reaching 98 are vastly improved.

You're correct Joe, that chit that you have to drink is the worse part, and it has gotten better over the years, and you don't have to drink as much as before. That gallon one was a killer, and I never could get the entire gallon down. But there wasn't anything left inside bc the exam was always a good one with just a couple of polyps that were removed. I'm on the 5 year schedule now!!!

so are you turning 100? once every 10 years, starting at 50 or would that be 90? I have had 2, had polyps removed, but haven't had another. Diabetes is gonna get me. No matter what diet I follow, lose weight, or whatever. I am on 5 shots of insulin a day and have to be careful of everything, I can't go on a pump because my glucose will go from 130 to 400 and down to 40 in a 3 hour period and a pump would overcompensate and kill me. So I take each day as a gift, make sure I tell my wife, kids and grands I love them everyday. Talk to my 90 year old dad every day, so i will have no regrets when my number is up. Now Go Tigers, I want a few more nattys before I go, and ti irritate my coot wife a little more!!!

Jan 10, 2020, 3:24 PM

colonoscopy 1 - found the polyp
colonoscopy 2 - mark the spot for surgery. Might have been an endoscopy?
colonoscopy 3 - one year after surgery
colonoscopy 4 - 3 years after that or 4 years after surgery
colonoscopy 5 - 3 years again or 7 years after surgery

hopefully we get to go to 5 years after that. 10 years is only for people when they don't find anything. After you have cancer it's 5 years max for life.

Good post.

Unlike many in here, I wasn't lucky enough to make it to my 40's etc before having to get one. I had a polyp come out when I was a young age of 17, ended up having to have a colon surgery to take out 10 inches worth of my colon that hadd ones too big to loop burn out. Have had to get colonoscopies through my life since every so many years. Luckily, all polyps I've had were benign...but like all of you, I can't stress enough how important it is to get checked. God Bless.

I had my first colonoscopy in my late 40's, I'm now in my late 60's. I've had one every 3-5 years. Lost my Dad, Aunt and an Uncle all to colon cancer. I've had polyps every colonoscopy I've had. The first few I dreaded it, but now I'm like bring it on. Such a preventable problem with proper screening. I'd recommend colonoscopies for all! I've got a great Doc (NC State graduate) and feel sure i'd be in real trouble without the colonoscopies. Please be proactive!!

Pre-cancerous polyps each time. The prep is by far the roughest part. The nurse asked me last time what my favorite part of the procedure was, and I said, "nighty-night". That, and being encouraged to fart afterwards.

Colonoscopy Good in More Ways Than Cancer

Jan 10, 2020, 7:13 PM

I’m 70 and have had several. Procedure much easier today than 20 years ago where the horror stories got their roots. My life was saved last year when my colonoscopy revealed a polyp on the mouth of my appendix. That forced an appendectomy which revealed the benign polyp, but also revealed an appendix outer membrane that was rotten and about to rupture. Dr said if it had ruptured, the fluid spilled into my abdomen would probably have killed me. Colonoscopies are life savers in many ways!! Many serious and potentially lethal conditions can be silently happening within us, and might be exposed by the procedure.

Have had several. No polyp problems but they did find out I had diverticulosis. That diagnosis prob saved me a lot of pain and other problems with that down the road.

The last colonoscopy the anesthesiologist told me you’re gonna like this new knock in the head we have. Man alive I woke up feeling like I’d slept for a week. I felt so good like every muscle in my body was relaxed. I want some of that stuff for the weekends.

Congrats for listening to your doctor. On a lighter note, this past year my wife was contacted to have her 3rd colonoscopy procedure. It was scheduled on Monday, so Sunday she drank the colon cleanse mixture and almost threw up several times. It was hard to watch, but she got threw it. The next day, I drove her to the hospital and helped her get ready for her procedure. After getting her clothes off and her little blue frontal cover on, they started her IV and told me I could wait on her in the lobby. 5 minutes later, they came to get me. Wow, I thought, that was quick. The Dr. came in and admitted they had called her in 1 year early and Insurance would not cover this until the following year. It was Monday, April 1st. I had joked with her the day before, what if your April fools joke was you did not have your procedure tomorrow. Well, it happened! BTW, a couple of weeks earlier, we were contacted by Bon Secour Payment group. It was Saturday and ask if we wanted to make a $700 payment for the procedure. I said yes and literally watched it leave my account before my call ended. When they told us the procedure was postponed, it took 10 days to return our $700. Ha. That's how it works.

Re: 7 years ago I turned 50 and had a colonoscopy

Jan 11, 2020, 12:05 PM

Had my first colonoscopy at 54 after thinking I had spotted something. A precancerous polyp turned up. The GI doc told me another six months with it would've required some removal of the colon. Have had several more during the ensuing years and the next one is due next month. Another one had turned up a few years ago but otherwise no problems. Will probably need to have a third endoscopy as well to stretch the esophagus since sometimes food will get hung up on the way down. Anyone having this issue frequently needs to have that procedure done especially if acid reflux is also a problem. It can lead to esophageal cancer if not treated. If you have both done, be sure to tell the attendants do the upper first if they're using the same instrument to avoid leaving a bitter taste.(JK). My father had to have a foot of his colon removed at 82 and lived another 13 years. That in part prompted me to be alert to the potential issue.

The reason that they take out about a foot of the colon

1

Jan 11, 2020, 12:16 PM

is that is the way the veins are attached to the colon. There is a large vein every foot or so. They have to take out the whole section, they can't just take out an inch or two.

Best post you have ever made on T-Net Neal, and you are exactly 100% right. The colonoscopy is absolutely painless, and you won't ever remember a thing about it. You wake up and go home as soon as you can stand up and get in a wheelchair, and they wheel you to your vehicle with a driver of course. And it beats the H E L L out of waiting until possible cancer has spread to other areas that will be a death sentence 90% of the time even with the treatments. After the treatments has tore down your body, you will be dead before you ever recover from those treatments, I know that to be the truth bc I watched my oldest sister die from the exact thing, colon cancer that spread to her liver before she ever had the first sign that she was sick.

Great post Neal!!!

Excellent advice. I had the procedure at 52 and they said

Jan 11, 2020, 5:15 PM

that the polyp was more concerning than average so I would have to have another colonoscopy in 3 years instead of the usual 5. So I had another last December the day before beating Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl. The news was so good that time that they said I didn't have to come back for 5 more years this time.

Anyway, I appreciate your post because everyone should have them as soon as they are 50 because it could prevent so much. And the procedure is not that bad at all. In and out in the same morning. When they say they are about to administer the drug, in my case, propofol, you won't even remember anything after that sentence.
