1990 defense

Feb 14, 2020, 9:00 AM

Watching 1990 beat down of uga.

That defense was STACKED.

Lb's kirkland, Simmons, Brewster and Johnson shut down future NFLer RB Garrison Hearst.

We have that defense this year against lsu they don't stand a chance

Last year's defense was better. Fire away

By "last year" you do mean 2018.

Didn't post that for argument; just opinion. Who really knows. But I do know LSU would've had at least one turnover.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"last year" = 2019***

To be fair, most of the players on the 1990 defense are probably out of shape now and would have difficulty keeping up with the 2019 defense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, they were fun to watch.

Feb 14, 2020, 9:12 AM

They were like Bama's was a few years ago. Swarming, hard hitting, relentless.

Yep. Clemson's D in the 1980s and early 90s was tremendous, no question.

They completely shut down and Illinois team that was supposed to have the best offense in the nation. That team was going to be Danny's second national championship team if he'd been allowed to stay.

Re: Yes, they were fun to watch.

Feb 14, 2020, 9:40 AM

Illinois averaged 26.6 points per game going into the Clemson bowl game. Best offensive team? Doubtful. Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Washington, BYU all better.

Aside from 1982 Danny's teams were always good for a

head-scratching loss at some point during the season. He was still an excellent coach, and the 1990 team was pretty stacked, but i really doubt we would've won it all. Then again, GT winning it all that year was also head-scratching so maybe just not losing at GT by 2 and finishing 11-1 would've been enough to be in the hunt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

1990 would have been the best chance but still

Feb 14, 2020, 12:44 PM

Can’t say we would have beat GT or uva (seems like both were rd losses by combined 5 pts.) as good as 89 team was we lost 2 we shouldn’t and Miami would have destroyed us

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Danny always seemed to lose one just from being so

Bob Trott did a great job that year, his only year as our DC. He had a ton of talent to work with.

Ron Dickerson as DC was a disaster.

Re: 1990 defense

Feb 14, 2020, 9:52 AM

Dickerson's overall head coaching record at Temple, Alabama State and Lambuth(?) was 19-68. Ugh!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That defense was a continution of the '89 defense

Feb 14, 2020, 10:00 AM

which was every bit as good as any we've had since '78. The '89 team had a couple of inexplicable losses, unless you consider the monsoon at Duke, but the destroy-ation they put on FSU and WVU that year was epic.

Feb 14, 2020, 1:02 PM

The interview with Major Harris's mom on the sideline during the game was epic. Major Harris of course was West Virginia's Heisman trophy runner up QB. My 13 yr old self got a huge kick out of her raising a concern that "them boys are killing my son out there". That reminds me I should YouTube it to see if I can watch it again.

Being a great defense back then basically meant stopping the run and then hoping you weren't playing one of the handful of teams that could actually throw the ball. Much more diversity and talent, especially in the passing game, these days.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Donnell Woolford and Deion Sanders would dominate

Feb 14, 2020, 1:12 PM

today just like they did then. And there's probably a lot more if I thought about it long enough. It wasn't the '60s, or even '70s.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There were plenty of teams that could, and did, throw.

Feb 14, 2020, 1:19 PM [ in reply to Re: 1990 defense ]

The NFL was starting to evolve with Jim Kelly and Buffalo, Dan Marino was putting up huge passing yards in Miami, and Warren Moon threw for over 49,000 yds. Several teams were getting into the Run and Shoot offense which is the precursor to the spread O we see, now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They were boring. All that ever happened when they were on

Feb 14, 2020, 4:09 PM

the field were punts.

2 yard run, 1 yard run, incomplete pass, punt. Over and over again.
