What was up with late 80's/early 90's rap albums

all having "skits"? First one I remember is De La Soul, but NWA all of their solo albums had em, Snoop Dogg had em, Eminem.....
Just an odd thing I've never heard before or since, nor in any other genre of music.

but they were usually meant to be told in order with the album. No one listens to full length albums front to back now, and streaming can make them seem out of place anyway. You get interludes and distractions that seem out of place.

You had all of the Mad Rapper and Mad Producer skits on BIG and Puff Daddy albums.
Redman Doc's the Name 2000 had the Reporter reporting about some riots or some such stuff.
I think Juvenile 400 Degrees had "As the Magnolia Turns" soap opera.
Those are just the ones that I listen to mostly.
