Question and maybe answer time

Dec 8, 2019, 4:37 PM

We are home from the ACCCG and I am sitting here juggling conference calls and travel plans, so if you have questions about staff rumors, the bowl game, the ACC title game, etc., ask away. Be patient...I will be toggling back and forth between tabs, but hopefully I can answer whatever legitimate (proving by legitimate that I know the members of the lunge all too well) questions you have.

I asked Dabo about that on one of the phone calls and he said that Rodgers and Ross (who didn't play much after second quarter) were both fine, but game was out of hand and they rested them. Both had dings heading into the week

If Scott leaves would TE be the only OC or would they continue with 2 OCs

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Question and maybe answer time

My guess is that Tony would be the lone OC for now but with a lot of input from the offensive staff, including Streeter

Dec 8, 2019, 4:54 PM

I think Tyler Grisham gets a long look during bowl season, Kyle Richardson would also be a strong candidate. Former Clemson GA Justin Stepp has had a LOT of success as a recruiter with Chad at SMU and Arky but not sure that would happen

What is your feel on Burch and Flowe at the moment? Any recruiting surprises on the horizon?

Men at 25 play football. Men at 40 play tennis. Men at 60 play golf. Have you noticed as men get older their balls get smaller.

Re: Question and maybe answer time

Dec 8, 2019, 4:59 PM

I think there is a fantastic chance with Flowe...I think Clemson leads at this point. As for Burch, everything I am hearing kind of points elsewhere. I think Clemson had a great shot, but there is just something off there. Clemson would have loved to have hosted him for a game but at some point the kid has to put forth the effort.

badge-seniorwriter.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Question and maybe answer time

Dec 8, 2019, 4:57 PM [ in reply to Re: Question and maybe answer time ]

For Braden...he has been on scout team all year and Dabo said last week they have to get him in game shape. And when it comes to Ohio St., I think you need Price and maybe Chalk to help out Anchrum with Chase Young. That can limit his opportunities. He will get snaps, just not sure how much in that first game.

I have been told more than once that this year is just icing on the cake...next year's time will be flat out loaded. Sure, there are some losses but with the DL more experienced (and adding bodies) and adding a dynamic LB and the offense....this team will be really good.

badge-seniorwriter.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you get the feeling that the staff is confident in the OL

It seems that we will be relying pretty heavily on a mix of unheralded upperclassman that have yet to make a big impact and young and green, but talented FR and SOs.

Re: Question and maybe answer time

Dec 8, 2019, 5:10 PM

Anticipated impact of Galloway? Since he got to prepare more fully for the ACCCG, can you gauge if he has grown/regressed?

What’s your (Dabo) approach to managing staff during this time of year with all of the flux of job openings and general interest? Do you have an opinion regarding commitment of examples where staff have left programs in this critical phase for promotions to another program, eg OC to HC.

A lot of players chose to sit out on postseason play as a business decision for themselves over the best interests of the team. Do you feel that staff leaving for a promotion as a business decision, even though it is over the teams best interest is a similar selfish decision or do you have a take on that juxtaposition?

Last season a Ross really emerged as a dominant player in postseason play. Do you feel that there could be similar coming out parties in this postseason?

Has Clemson’s OL faced anyone even close to Chase Young for OSU? Hightower from Charlotte comes to mind. How do you prepare for that sort of rare talent.

How many players are allowed to travel for the playoff games?

Are you (Dabo) offended that Elliots name has been mentioned as HC for the Cowboys but yours hasn’t come up? (Joking of course)

Last year, a lot of people said Clemson had an advantage over Alabama because they were able to focus on Alabama during the ND prep whereas Alabama had to completely focus on OU. Is there any truth to that? During these long breaks, do you completely focus on one team or prepare for potential future opponents? (Probably a dumb question but it is interesting)

How do you attempt to simulate Justin Fields... Taisun or Jimmy Greenbeans?

Sorry for the laundry list... but it was a fun exercise.

anticipated impact of Galloway? Since he got to prepare more fully for the ACCCG, can you gauge if he has grown/regressed?.....see above answer on Gallowat.

What’s your (Dabo) approach to managing staff during this time of year with all of the flux of job openings and general interest? Do you have an opinion regarding commitment of examples where staff have left programs in this critical phase for promotions to another program, eg OC to HC. Dabo always has a plan in place, and right now game planning isn't as important (to me) as recruiting because we have NSG coming up and you have to plan for next season. If youu want to see how it affects a program, see Alabama with the Lane Kiffin stuff a few years ago..Saban flat out told him to get out.

A lot of players chose to sit out on postseason play as a business decision for themselves over the best interests of the team. Do you feel that staff leaving for a promotion as a business decision, even though it is over the teams best interest is a similar selfish decision or do you have a take on that juxtaposition? It's a business decision with personal ramifications. Those guys have put in the hours and deserve their shot. Because of the early NSD now, they can't wait until after the season to make decisions.

Last season a Ross really emerged as a dominant player in postseason play. Do you feel that there could be similar coming out parties in this postseason? Ross 2.0? How about..Justyn Ross again?

Has Clemson’s OL faced anyone even close to Chase Young for OSU? Hightower from Charlotte comes to mind. How do you prepare for that sort of rare talent. Nobod close to Chase Young. Going to have to use a TE to help the tackles. Good thing the TE hasn't been a huge part of the passing game this season.

How many players are allowed to travel for the playoff games? Not sure, I will ask.

Are you (Dabo) offended that Elliots name has been mentioned as HC for the Cowboys but yours hasn’t come up? (Joking of course) Even Elliott laughed at that last night, saying, "That might be more than I can bite off."

Last year, a lot of people said Clemson had an advantage over Alabama because they were able to focus on Alabama during the ND prep whereas Alabama had to completely focus on OU. Is there any truth to that? During these long breaks, do you completely focus on one team or prepare for potential future opponents? (Probably a dumb question but it is interesting). Brent Venables has growled at me way too much for me to believe HE does that, but you better believe the GA's are looking. That is why people like Tommy Bowden and Kyle Richardson are on board.

How do you attempt to simulate Justin Fields... Taisun or Jimmy Greenbeans? Taisum for sure.

Sorry for the laundry list... but it was a fun exercise.

I don't know if you are really allowed to give a straight

Dec 8, 2019, 6:24 PM

answer on this or not, but...

Do you feel that there are any concerns about the OL next year? It's the one spot on the roster that looks like it could be a potential weakness. I know we have a lot of very heralded players coming in, but 2020 looks like it could be a bit of a gap year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don't know if you are really allowed to give a straight

Dec 8, 2019, 6:57 PM

I actually have concerns about the offensive line myself..hard to replace four starters, all of whom have played a LOT of football. There is talent there - Putnam earned snaps this year, Cade Stewart and Matt Bockhorst have played a ton of snaps and Carman is the anchor. Add in Vinson and some of the others and that is a good start. They just need experience.

I am not really tracking Burch at this point, not that it did any good anyway. Flowe and Simpson are interesting, and I am still watching Henderson the WR and a few others. Kendall Dennis, the CB that just got an offer, is intriguing. I am thinking there might be some attrition in the secondary

Re: Question and maybe answer time

Dec 8, 2019, 8:22 PM

I know I'm a bit late to the party here, but one question:

I know Jeff Scott to South Florida is a strong possibility and am very glad for him if it comes true.

What impact does this have on recruiting? Were there any strong targets in the 20/21/22 class that this affects? It seemed like 2/3 or more of our highest-profile recruits he had a hand in and while Clemson's brand is much bigger now than even when I was in school 10 years ago, I can't help but think we've (potentially) lost a great recruiter.

Thank David, and go Tigers!

I remember reading a few years ago that the staff had a certain swagger of confidence before for the OSU game that resulted in 31-0. Reading the tea leafs, do you have a feel for the sense of confidence or lack thereof by the players/staff for OSU or the playoff at large?
