Question about Simmons and the NFL.

Jan 9, 2020, 11:19 AM

I'm not NFL expert. Don't pay much attention to it.

But, isn't Simmons the prototypical outside LB in a 3-4 set? He can be an edge rusher, drop back into coverage, pick up a RB coming out of the backfield, cover a TE man-to-man. He may not be able to cover a slot receiver man-to-man in the NFL, but he might even be able to do that on occassion.

I don't expect him to go in the top 3, but I really don't see him falling beyond the 10-12 range.

Is that where y'all see him?

BTW, I'm still telling all these guys around me (Central Florida area is UF country, so it is SEC country) that they are way underestimating LSU, just like they did last year.

They don't believe me. But, they didn't believe me last year, either.

Last year they underestimated how many INTs Tua was going to throw.

I meant Clemson. Sorry. Most folks around here think LSU wins easily.

Everyone with a draft opinion on screen or online has him in the top 15 with many in the top 10.

Per usual the actual NFL execs are mum.

I expect Simmons in the 8-15 range in the draft.

His role on an NFL defense depends on their scheme.

Depending on where he is drafted he could end up with a similar role to what he has at Clemson.

I see him as a fit at free safety or outside LB. I do agree that the NFL uses true corners to cover slot guys most of the time.

One thing that he may do different in the NFL is play middle LB. I have seen a few teams who put bigger backers on the outside to rush the passer and play the off-tackle runs. Then the smaller backers in the middle to basically chase the ball to both sidelines with less pre-snap responsibilities. I guess they think big DTs will eat up inside runs and they want to let the fast guys cover the whole field instead of being stuck on one side.

It will be very interesting to see how he is used for sure.

8-15 sounds about right. If his numbers at the combine blow everyone away, maybe higher.

I was hoping he might last until the raider's pick.

No, typically an OLB in a 3-4 is closer to a DE, Clowney is

Jan 9, 2020, 11:33 AM

probably closer to the prototypical 3-4 DE

Everything I've read...

has his as a top 15 pick. Some even have him as a top 10 pick.

I know Simmons is bigger than Deion Sanders, but he does remind of him with his explosiveness.

Deion didn't like to tackle. Simmons dreams about it...
