though personally I use limas and butterbeans interchangeably. My preference is black eyed peas. But I eat lima/butterbeans frequently too.

Regulat lima beans and butterbeans are different. I just always get the ones called butterbeans on the bag so I know. But basically butterbeans are lima beans that are a certain ripeness and size, whereas full grown lima beans are a pale color and bigger and taste worser.

They are usually just heat and serve. Butterbeans must be cooked on med to low heat for four to six hours with bacon or fatback. If they break apart in the pot the heat was too high.
