Possible shootout

Oct 6, 2020, 1:27 PM

First let me say that the weather forecast makes this a much less likely scenario but:

When is the last time that our Tigers needed to win a football game in a shootout, and they succeeded?

Sure we have scored a ton of points in games, and we have shown the ability to score almost at will many many times.

But when is the last time we couldn't rely on our defense and our offense had to put up 40+ just to get a win.

The last time I remember doing it successfully was vs Louisville in 2016. Later that year we lost a shootout with Pitt and then we won the national title with less than 40 points even though we scored a lot late to win it (shootout-esque).

In '17 we couldn't do it.

In '18 the other teams hardly ever scored.

In '19 our best chance was against LSU and we came up short.

I certainly hope that our defense shows up big and we don't have to score 40 to win, but what are you thoughts on how our offense will handle the task when they HAVE to score over and over to win the game?

Tajh Boyd had to do it numerous times as our defenses were good, not great when he played.

I think describing our defenses as good back then is very generous. In 2011, we were #81 in scoring defense and #71 in Total Defense. That isn't even average, but terrible. 2012, #47 scoring and #65 Total. That's below average for a P5 program. But it kept going up after that. It's been top 5 the last 4 seasons and only below top 10 once since 2014.
