I've got bats in my belfry, literally

May 10, 2012, 8:24 AM

anyone with experiences with bat removal? I know where they are getting in and out of the attic, is there a good way to get them all out while I am repairing the hole? Don't want to trap any in for them to stink up my domain with a rotting carcass.
Or hire someone? Anyone in Upstate y'all know?

Just an FYI, Belfry is a great jailbroken app for the iPad

so you can have the clock, calculator, and other stock apps that aren't part of the iPad.

Have you ever tried to shoot bats with a shotgun?

May 10, 2012, 8:36 AM

It's actually very challenging.

Wouldn't their sonar lead them right into buckshot?***

I certainly wouldn't waste buckshot on a bat to begin with

May 10, 2012, 10:02 AM

but in my experience, bats are just danged hard to target in the first place. We would always see bats nearing dusk out at our farm when we would be shooting clays and we would always try to nail one. Only once out of maybe a hundred attempts to shoot a bat was one of us successful.

Obviously you haven't watched Billy the Exterminator. Seal up their entry point at night while they are out feeding.

in your area.

I have a similar situation with honey bees.
The ag ext office referred me to a list of contacts to help with removal.

You can typically grab them with your bare hands.

May 10, 2012, 9:34 AM

And throw them out of the window, or beat them against a wall til they die.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Might want to get them out soon. It is the pregnant season.***

FAT TAX NOW!

Peppermint oil (concentrated, from a health food store)

May 10, 2012, 10:06 AM

I have had a problem with bats nesting in one the vents at the top of my attic, above my garage door. I hate bat droppings on the driveway! I read on the internet somewhere that bats hated the smell of peppermint. I bought peppermint oil and added a small amount to water in a spray bottle. I then sprayed it on the nesting area and any bats I could see. I sprayed twice a day and the bats left in 2 -3 days. Some keep coming back every year, but leave when I spray.

As far as not trapping them in your attic, I have read you can put plastic over the entry area. Seal it on the top and sides, but not tightly at the bottom. The bats can get out but do not come back in. I have not tried this because my vent is so high above my driveway. I don't want to be 25 feet over concrete on a ladder and have a bat fly out at me.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can't speak on the peppermint, but try excluding them

May 10, 2012, 10:35 AM

near dusk, and place a plastic screen (some type of mesh) over the opening they're coming in through. Secure the screen at the top, and have it loose enough they can fly out through the loose flap.

Once they're gone, keep the screen in place, tight enough they can't get back in, until you fix the holse. (BTW, not all bats leave every evening, so you may want to leave the net in place for several days anyway before you fix it).

Not sure when the young are born, but if there are young in your colony, you're signing their death warrant. FWIW.

Googe 'excluding bats' if you want lots more info.
