On This Date in 1974: Clemson-28 UGA- 24

Rivalry Established

Football Historians suggest that the meeting between Clemson and UGA in 1974 in Death Valley was when the Rivalry Changed Forever.

The Tigers were fresh off an upset win over Georgia Tech after an 0-2 start to their '74 campaign. The Bulldogs entered with a 2-1 record, as 10-point favorites on the road, and having not lost to the Tigers in 10 consecutive games over a period of nearly 20 years (1955).

For most of the game, Georgia's offense was rather effective, scoring three touchdowns on the ground: two by Horace King and a third from Andy "Breezy" Reid. In addition, quarterback Matt Robinson averaged almost 15 yards per pass attempt. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs had some serious issues on this afternoon. Even Erk Russell's recent switch from a five- to a six-man front to slow opposing ground games couldn't hold back the Tigers. Two Clemson quarterbacks — Mark Fellers and Mike O'Cain — were each responsible for two touchdowns while directing the Tigers' Veer offense to more than 300 yards rushing in a 28-24 upset victory in the Valley.

Best Is The Standard

I was a sophomore at that game - it was great because....

we NEVER beat Georgia - and we had just beaten Tech so everything was great - beating both these schools in the same season was something nobody had predicted.

Yes, I would agree that the rivalry started changing with that win - started to be even after that.

yep remember it well. undefeated home season that year. Beating GT in DV ultimately cause them to end the series till they joined the ACC. Good times

(along with a lot of other stuff) in a house fire in 1977. 1-4 on the road in '74 though kind of put a damper on things. But, hey, it was a helluva lot better than '73 or '75!

I wasn't at the game , but I was a senior at SHS and we had a junior quarterback , skinny kid

named Steve Fuller that turned out pretty good , We ran the Veer also and I was a slow pulling
guard that made a block every now and then .

Yeah, he was pretty good, but now is only the second best QB to ever wear #4 for Clemson. #28, on the other hand, still has a LOT of ground to make up, but we shall see.
