Hugh Freeze to Liberty "University"

Dec 7, 2018, 10:57 AM

To steal the most accurate comment I've ever seen on reddit...

A fraudulent Christian head coach for a fraudulent Christian university.

I really thought he'd go to little Nicky's bad coach reform school.

Not sure what's fraudulent about Liberty.. met a lot of great people who went there. They aren't our rivals if that's what is getting you stirred up.

OP is anti-Christian it seems

Dec 7, 2018, 6:53 PM

He made a derogatory comment not long ago about Trevor Lawrence's gf going to Anderson University. If he is not against Christian schools, he sure has had a habit of speaking against them for some weird reason.

Too bad his opinion does not align well with the facts.

I'm not antichristian or whatever you want to call it. I just don't think people should waste money on a degree at private university, especially for profit, when they can get an equal or better degree from a public university.

Re: OP is anti-Christian it seems

Sorry for the TD, meant to be a TU (will TU a different post). I got my undergrad from a public school and graduate degree from a private and the private school was cheaper (per semester hour) because of all the discounts I got from military and corporate. I am a professional student at this point in my life and have been to six different universities, and they are almost all the same as far as I can tell. Granted, I have never attended an Ivy league school; however, I started in a "tech" school (and not the GT tech type tech either), and have been to private, public, huge state, and small private, and they all offer the same type of education I believe. I am getting my doctorate now at a private and it seems to be very similar to my cousin who is getting his doctorate from *cough* U5C. (hmmm, on second thought....maybe that should be concerning).

This is related to my biggest gripe with schools like liberty that, I would call it, prey on those with the G.I. Bill. Liberty is just notorious for it. And that's how they set their tuition price (around 20,100 according to 2015 ipeds data) per year, to get the most money they can from veterans.

It is 100% no coincidence that the tuition at liberty is right below the maximum the G. I. Bill will pay for tuition per year which just went up to a little more than $23,000.

I'm also doing my PhD in higher ed, so the affordability of postsecondary education is something I'm passionate about.

They're getting rich off of their online students

Dec 7, 2018, 10:28 PM

many of whom have military connections.

"The real driver of growth at Liberty, it turns out, is not the students who attend classes in Lynchburg but the far greater number of students who are paying for credentials and classes that are delivered remotely, as many as 95,000 in a given year. By 2015, Liberty had quietly become the second-largest provider of online education in the United States, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education, its student population surpassed only by that of University of Phoenix, as it tapped into the same hunger for self-advancement that Trump had with his own pricey Trump University seminars. Yet there was a crucial distinction: Trump’s university was a for-profit venture. (This month, a judge finalized a $25 million settlement for fraud claims against the defunct operation.) Liberty, in contrast, is classified as a nonprofit, which means it faces less regulatory scrutiny even as it enjoys greater access to various federal handouts.

By 2017, Liberty students were receiving more than $772 million in total aid from the U.S. Department of Education — nearly $100 million of it in the form of Pell grants and the rest in federal student loans. Among universities nationwide, it ranked sixth in federal aid. Liberty students also received Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, some $42 million in 2016, the most recent year for which figures are available. Although some of that money went to textbooks and nontuition expenses, a vast majority of Liberty’s total revenue that year, which was just above $1 billion, came from taxpayer-funded sources.

And it was no secret which part of the university was generating most of that revenue, said Chris Gaumer, a Liberty graduate and former professor of English there. “When I was there, at faculty meetings the commentary was that online was funding the school, while they were trying to just break even on the residential side,” he said. “It was understood that on the online side, they were making a killing.”

as far as Freeze. I think he should have been given probation himself and not allowed to coach so quickly but whatever. I hope that he is a changed man and does things the right way with this 2nd chance.

Public schools profit as well

Dec 7, 2018, 9:25 PM

There are two things that are always under construction due to adding on no matter what: universities and hospitals. There is a lot wrong with higher learning, but the debate between private and public is one that I would rate at the bottom. Education should be extremely affordable, if not open-sourced, and we should teach people how to think instead of what to think. I have seen many smart, uneducated people that could think as opposed to educated people that knew a skill; however, had zero sense of logic. Contribution to knowledge should not begin at a 700-level course. I have a lot of opinions on this, but everyone else probably does as well.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Liberty U just sounds shady

Dec 7, 2018, 9:49 PM

"Liberty has about 11,000 on-campus students — and approximately 95,000 students enrolled in the distance-learning program... the online university features exam questions chosen at random, required textbooks failing to arrive, and a teaching faculty incapable of spelling words like “cite” or “exceptions.”

"Remote students are charged $455 per credit. (Assuming that 120 credits are necessary for a bachelor’s degree, that’s a total degree cost of about $54,600.) Meanwhile, Liberty spends on average $2,609 per full-time student per year (on campus and off campus combined) — about a tenth of what, for example, a private university like Notre Dame spends."

"Liberty University evaded federal scrutiny because it is classified as a nonprofit, but this also means that the university gets more federal funding... The Times reported that most of Liberty University's revenue came from taxpayer-funded sources, and that each of the university's 300 sales people were pressured to enroll up to eight students per day. A division of 60 sales people targeted members of the military specifically, because they have greater access to federal tuition assistance. The university's salespeople are instructed to describe the costs on a per-credit basis rather than a per-course basis, which makes the university seem more affordable. The salespeople are also instructed to not inform potential students of the Christian orientation of the education... The credits for the Bible-studies classes are usually not transferable to other universities, which disincentivizes students from leaving Liberty for other universities."

"In May 2012, Liberty University Chancellor and President Jerry Falwell Jr. announced that the school's net assets are worth $1 billion, in part from the success of its online learning program and from accelerated facility expansion. The valuation is a 10-fold increase since 2006."

"Student financial aid is a big part of Liberty University's business model. The students at LU received approximately $445 million in federal financial aid money in 2010, the highest total of any school in Virginia and one of the highest in the country. The total, a 56 percent increase over the prior year, was mostly in the form of student loans, but also included some grants and other forms of aid. Campus officials estimated the total received in 2013 at $775 million."

"Liberty University students have a higher rate of defaults within three years of completing their studies than the national average or students at other nonprofit colleges. Liberty University spends far less on instruction than traditional private universities, for-profit colleges and other nonprofit religious colleges.

The New York Times reported that faculty at LU acknowledge that Liberty University Online is a steep drop-off in quality relative to the traditional classes at the university."

But the current president was paying money to raw-dog pornstars while his wife and newborn son were at home. He also helped draft his ill father's will, cut out his older brother, and then when sued, cut off all the promised medical funds for his nephew with Cerebral Palsy. His charity has been caught funneling money into the Trump Organization that was funded for a childhood cancer charity. But it's okay because the president of this "christian" "university" called Trump a good, moral man.

But yeah, let's go with trashing the libs for their lack of morals when our president is about as morally bankrupt as you can possible get.

My wife got her Masters from Liberty; undergrad Clemson

Dec 8, 2018, 12:11 AM

Liberty was extremely supportive of our military family. Tuition was automatically cut in half (her entire program cost us only $9K) and their incorporation of faith and Christian study in non-religious degree programs was outstanding. Many times they reached out to us to lend a hand in any way they could, even after she graduated.

My wife found that not only was her education developed in ways Clemson didn't touch (she was a dual-major from Clemson that graduated in 3 1/2 years), but she also reinforced her foundation in faith. She loved how everything reverted back to Biblical teachings.

Lastly, the Christian faith is based on grace. It's the only religion in the world where you don't have to earn anything. Maybe the AD and football coach have seen that grace come to life.

"Let those without sin cast the first stone."
