Look at these batting averages...
Feb 24, 2019, 2:36 PM
|
|
Sam Hall - .208
Grayson Byrd - .200
Michael Green - .182
Logan Davidson - .167
Adam Hackenberg - .250
Bo Majkowski - .200
Kyle Wilkie - .125
Right now, the temm average is a paltry .233 and that is against the weak part of the schedule.
Maybe it's just me, but perhaps it's time to bring-in a new hitting coach.

We were almost last in hitting in the ACC last season and yeah except Davidson and maybe Wilkie. Those AVG’s will be around 250

Can he also bring in new weather? It’s 2 weeks in and several of those are somewhat proven commodities. Baseball is a tough game and it takes more than 8 games or so do build a batting average. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say I bet Davidson, Hall, and Wilkie will be near .300 hitters by the end of the year.
Baseball doesn’t matter until ACC play starts. These games are about Monte finding the right lineup for post season play.

Well the starting line up today wasn't it. We didn't start heating up hitting until Monte put in the the two non freshman pinch hitters.

We have to have walks to score runs, if a pitcher is wild we score. All they have to do is throw strikes and we struggle at the plate . I can assure you the VMI pitcher doesn’t have a big MLB future

We have to have walks to score runs? I’m not sure how many D1 baseball teams there are but walking leads to runs for all of them. Last year we were near the top of the country in walks... which is good coaching.
Also, walks aside another way to score runs is to hit homeruns. We currently are second in the country right now.
Hall of Fame careers have BAs getting a hit 1 out of 3 times. That means most players facing pitchers who throws strikes gets out more than they get on.
Baseball is a game of failures and statically you don’t have enough ABs to worry about average right now. This team hits the ball fine and will find their groove calm down.

I guess we will rely on a team OBP close to .400. Didn’t read that in a Tnet article so not sure if getting on base is a good thing or not, please help.

Troll or not I like to help educate people so they at least argue well. Lord knows I’ve had my arguments here about recruiting and importance of stars and get the canned response Dabo knows best. Will give the guy the benefit of the doubt but at least make better arguments than we drink at hitting 2 series in lol.

I certainly hope you are right but for the last 2 seasons our biggest problem has been timely hitting Vs quality teams . Meaning losing 2 straight Clemson regionals to a down Vandy team. We finished next to last in hitting I believe last year and our record was padded by beating a lot of bad teams.

I don’t disagree with that but this years team is built differently than last 2 years. Last few years have been built on long ball and good pitching usually beats HRs. This years team is built on OBP and occasional long ball. As the year goes you will see improved BA. weather and being able to actually practice will help as well.

Pretty much the exact same but replace HR hitting with getting on base, using speed on basebaths, and small ball concept. This years team is built on speed.
Although, I remember a ton of games last year where we plated 6 with only 3 hits,1 of which was for extra bases, don’t you?

So how do the teams with really good batting averages manage it? Usually the weather is the same on both sides of the field.

Teams with really good batting averages usually start the season by playing in the Midwest or West Coast.
Weather only affects the two teams playing in the game right? I’m not a weather expert I’ll admit but is it the same across the country when the calculate batting averages?
For instance in this game where it is the same, one team has 5 hits and the other 4 hits. Is that similar? I’d say weather does impact those 2 teams the same.

Prior to today's game we had 42 hits, fourteen of which were home runs. That's 33% of our total hits and not a sustainable ratio. Home runs are nice but we need those solid singles, particularly when we have men on base.

The batting averages will change hopefully but we do tend to strikeout a good bit. With all of Monte’s teams, we don’t tend to see batters go with the pitch.
Coastal does a great job doing that. Go with the pitch and hit to the opposite field. Nothing wrong with drawing walks but you need basehits too.
Our risp is pathetic so far this year. Granted, very small sample but when have we been at the top with risp?

It’s VMI , yeah we won 40 something games last year . Wouldn’t you like to start beating real teams. I bet our record vs quality teams last year was terrible. You know why ? Because they don’t walk 8-9 batters a game

A new hitting coach is not what we need or really want . . .
Feb 24, 2019, 11:33 PM
|
|
Us old f@rts were taught to hit differently than today's diamond boys. We were taught to sit on the fastball and adjust to the off speed, hitting it to the opposite field when possible.
Today's philosophy is to pick a pitch and sit on it, then drive it deep into the gaps. If you don't get your pitch, take it and guess again. This philosophy will lead to lower averages and more extra base hits. It will also lead to more backward K strikeouts and fly outs. Rarely are pitches hit to the opposite field, as everything is attempted to be driven into the gaps. This philosophy will also cut down on situational hitting. It's a feast or famine mentality.
Rather than a new hitting coach, what us old guys want is a new hitting philosophy . . . at first glance, that is my desire . . . but is my old antiquated approach really what is best in today's game?
Yes, I miss balls hit to the right side to move a runner to third . . . and contact made simply to score a run . . . but we never hit 0-2 counts out of the park . . . or had 9 hole hitters that could go "yard" at any time. The game has changed and I need to learn to be ok with that.
Congrats to those who flashed the leather and beat VMI again today!!! Nice series Tigers!!! Proud of you!!!

It is super early first of all. Second of all batting average is an overrated stat. On base and slugging are more valuable. Would you rather have a team that hit .250 but had no power whatsoever and didn’t take walks. Nah
