Normally don't get into personal stuff on here folks,

Mar 13, 2014, 8:58 PM

but I'm in a bit of a celebratory mood today. Today marks 1 year that I've been sober.

Without going into too many details, I was a heavy binger from the ages of 15-24. I wrecked cars, got arrested a couple of times, woke up beside women I had no business sleeping with and dragged my tail to work with many a hangover. With the help of some close friends, I decided to make a change at this time last year.

I've never been prouder of any accomplishment in my life, and that includes graduating from college with honors and carrying on a rather successful professional career.

I wanted to share with yall because it means a lot to me...and because I know there is someone out there who might benefit from the message that "your life can be better."

Cheers!

Takes a big person

Mar 13, 2014, 9:00 PM

To look in the mirror and admit there is a problem. Takes an even bigger person to actually do something about it. Good luck man.

Good for you

that and more guts to overcome that demon. My Dad was an alcoholic and it ruined his life. Though he died a sober man he wasted some pretty impressive talents. Congrats to you and stay the course.

The words of support really mean more than you guys know. There have been many fidgety afternoons and late nights I've come to the Tigerboreds to take my mind off of the party scene. I appreciate those who have reached out and encourage any guys (or gals!) who are struggling to nip the problem in the bud early.

Thanks guys.

Your testimony could be a big positive to many folks - keep

Mar 13, 2014, 9:47 PM

being brave to stay the course and to keep telling the story. You never know the difference it could make.

Congrats ! ! !

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

By the way

Mar 13, 2014, 10:03 PM [ in reply to Re: Normally don't get into personal stuff on here folks, ]

Please always say no to the first one whatever the (positive or negative) ----- occasion, celebration, situation, built-in-excuse, catastrophe, revenge, hurt feelings, showing off, etc...

THAT WAY THE SECOND ONE NEVER BECOMES AN OPTION.

Thanks for the words of wisdom, brother. One is always one too many and never enough for some folks. I'm one of those guys.

Another thought

Mar 13, 2014, 10:20 PM

which nobody ever warned me about.

Be careful of replacing an addictive behavior with another addiction even when the new one is positive --- such as working out in the gym --- later on, when you get tired of the new addiction, there could be a void that you do not even realize is making you more vulnerable.

Yes, have fought this battle with distracting myself with work. It took a while but I think I'm at a healthy balance now...and if it's not, I strive to improve each day in tackling things head on.

Great job man! Those first 3-6 months are a killer!

Mar 14, 2014, 10:04 AM

Glad you got to where you are, but everyday you go forward it gets easier and easier to forget where you came from. (says the guy who got a DUI after being ten years sober.) i've been back at it another 5 years, but I sure missed out on another good year of living thinking things would be different the next time.
Enjoy the day friend, keep up the good life!
