Nike is not idiots

Sep 4, 2018, 1:52 PM

They hire the best of the best. What are they doing today? Creating debate with their name attached to it. People are talking about them.

As the biggest sports apparel company in the world they are getting everyone to talk about it. Do you really think they are dumb enough to risk their careers to advertise something that won’t work?

BTW I disagree with his stance but he did this knowing he would never start in the NFL again

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's simply a knee pad advertisement.

Sep 4, 2018, 1:55 PM

Genius, honestly. Everyone knows they make the best.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They probably are appealing to their market

Sep 4, 2018, 1:55 PM

not a lot of 50 year old white dudes dropping $300 on the latest Jordans.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. I didn't drop $300, but I bought some shoes this week

Sep 4, 2018, 1:57 PM

Bravo on them.

Don't like it? Too bad!

There's a lot of Dads who will not be giving junior the money or buying him shoes.

OTOH, there's probably a lot of "woke" people who will run out and plop down a chunk of change so they can advertise their wokeness.

The people who don't like this won't make enough of a dent to offset the increased business that this drives from their core demographic. And it's in their right to do this. One of the beautiful things about our country.

Re: Nike is not idiots

Sep 4, 2018, 2:01 PM

Exactly. This is the so called "no publicity is bad publicity" strategy.
And please don't be too crazy about it. It's all about the money.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Nike is not idiots

Sep 4, 2018, 2:04 PM

Bingo... it’s all about money. And I know the demographic who pays top dollar for shoes will support this ad but all I can do is quit spending my money and encourage everyone I know to do the same.

Which is too bad bc I like their kid shoes and running shoes but I guess Under Amour isn’t bad.

Well, as a far left-leaning millennial, a proud Clemson alumni and #1 Clemson fan (and Auburn alumni, please dont't look too much into that part), I don't particularly support or oppose Kaepernick's kneeing.

And we can debate political issues all day long for a good cause, since I happen to believe those meaningful conversion will make U.S. and possibly the whole world a better place.

As for the nike issue, I would buy the sport gear and really every products based on the product's quality and overall value. Political activity should be the way we define our society rather than some companies' selling point.

It's hypocritical he will be making millions off the backs of essentially slave labor. For years I have bought New Balance, made in America.

Make sure you check your NB label if you don't already. I'm a NB wearer but many of my pairs are not made in USA.

"We’re proud to be the only major company to make or assemble more than 4 million pairs of athletic footwear per year in the USA, which represents a limited portion of our US sales. Where the domestic value is at least 70%, we label our shoes Made in the USA."

Re: Nike is not idiots

Sep 4, 2018, 2:36 PM

Well as a rule of business it's not smart to alienate a good portion of your customer base and that's exactly what Nike did. They'll suffer for this ( -2% on their stock for the day ) and will inevitably be forced to backtrack. This is no doubt due to some outside political pressure of some sort because a business like Nike wouldn't just make a decision like this on a whim. No doubt they did it kicking and screaming. Just goes to show there are some pretty powerful forces out there that are pushing this SJW, anti-american agenda.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Nike is not idiots

Sep 4, 2018, 3:21 PM

They'll suffer initially , but I suppose in the long term this deal will make them money . That corporation has made very few bad moves from a financial gains perspective over the years .
A lot of study and forethought went into this decision , they didn't make a sacrifice here ... you can bet on that .

Pretty sure Disney didn't think Star Wars would suffer from going full on SJW considering it's one of the most storied franchises in movie history. They were wrong and have all but destroyed the Star Wars brand. I could see the exact same happening with Nike. Instead of being known for making good products, they'll be known as the company that endorsed an anti-american socialist. Good luck overcoming something like that.

Possibly the best tweet that sums up this whole debacle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Nike is not idiots

Sep 4, 2018, 6:56 PM [ in reply to Re: Nike is not idiots ]

Disney didn't fail because they went "full-on SJW" with the new Star Wars. They failed because the new stories have gotten progressively worse and worse.

At the end of the day, every good story is ultimately character-driven, and the new characters utterly fell flat. There's no character arc to any of them except maybe Rey. Daisy Ridley's character is reasonably interesting and compelling though Last Jedi messed some of that up, the rest were utterly ridiculous. Finn turned in about 3.5 seconds after a lifetime of Storm Trooper indoctrination to become an utterly normal, affable guy and stand-up member of the Resistance. Huh? The other characters were utterly flat. "Forced diversity" is rightwing derpitude and has nothing to do with why the franchise is teetering.

Take a look at Netflix's recent Altered Carbon. It's far more "diverse" than the new Star Wars but it's incredibly compelling because it remains utterly character-driven and you actually like, empathize with, and are interested in the characters. Who, far from being flat and one-dimensional, are compelling, flawed, human...and oftentimes incredibly fascinating.

Sep 4, 2018, 5:22 PM [ in reply to Re: Nike is not idiots ]

You don't understand who their target demo is if you think they are going to backtrack on this. Hint: It isn't the typical person who you find is most outraged by Kaepernick.

The loudest "its so disrespectful to the flag and military" person is typically a middle aged and up white man. Nike isn't concerned with that demo. Millenials, women, and people of color are who they target and those groups largely are on Kaep's side, or don't care either way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Nike is not idiots

Sep 4, 2018, 6:38 PM

So you don't think the "middle aged and up white man" has kids? Hell, the majority of millennials are living off of their parents. If those parents choose not to support a company like Nike then that will apply to the whole family in most cases.

stock may have been impacted a little by the ad campaign, but I think it had more to do with trade talks and NAFTA renegotiation. Under Armour went up some, but all-in-all it was a rough day for several segments of the market last time I checked.

Well....here we go again... not only do I not buy any products associated with the NFL, that is officially liscenced products, I can now add Nike to the list. Sorry about that my beloved Clemson Tigers. None of my hard earned money goes to Nike as long as this is happening. Yes, he has a right to work and make a living, a right to protest blah blah blah. So do I. Is this really the way to make changes? What ever happened to voting? Wouldn't voting for sheriff's,mayors and other officials that are in charge be a better start to make changes? I think Dabo was right when he said" We have a sin problem". And as for the premise Nike is not idiots...I remember when Coke A Cola changed its formula.. didn't work out for them. God bless all of you,no matter what side of the issue you are on.

NKE is trading at $79.88/share in after-hours, not even 5% off its all-time high of $83.68 from less than a month ago. The "dip" today was nothing more than a buy-in opportunity. Outraged snowflakes may have sold off their shares today, but smart money is buying them up.

But you think they don't know what they're doing..
