Leggett catch was the play of the game

Jan 13, 2017, 8:37 AM

IMO

Totally agree. W/out it, it's a 40+ yard FG attempt to tie.*

Very high degree of difficulty on that catch****

Sports Science on ESPN did a little segment on it

Basically proves that Leggett is a grade A baller.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was a 4th-and-16 caliber catch, no doubt***

I had that catch as my #2 play because without it we have a difficult kick and OT . My #1 play was the catch and run by Deon Cain ...because even though he didn't score ...that play GOT OUR OFFENSE GOING and turned the momentum in the game to us. #3 was our defense keeping us in the game after going down 14-0, #4 was the leaping catch by Mike Williams on the game winning drive, and #5 was the game winner by Hunter Renfrow ....because how many times have we seen passes like that one dropped in the NFL and college.

I totally concur. Been telling folks all week that was the catch of the game in my eyes!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like it. I would also add Williams+Leggett catches on last

Jan 13, 2017, 8:38 AM

drive to keep the driving moving. Fantastic athletic plays- proving we just wanted it more. To beat Bama, you need "Dudes" to make plays, we had just that

Mike's catch on the TD drive to get to 28 was amazing as well.

I have a question about the pass interference call against

Jan 13, 2017, 9:24 AM

Williams that set up the game-winning touchdown. I know that it was called as interference in the end zone, but it looks to me like the contact occurred before Williams entered the end zone. If the referee had said the interference occurred before the end zone, where would the ball have been placed? The play started at the 9-yard line. How do you think that would have affected the final play?

I did think the onsides kick was amazing. The ball barely made it 10 yards, I didn't think it was going to make it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

College PI is either 15 yards, or a spot foul if < 15 yards

Jan 13, 2017, 9:28 AM

the PI happened on the 2, so the ball was placed at the 2.

I believe it would've been half the distance to the goal putting us 4.5 yards out. In the NFL it is spot of the foul, but in college, it's half the distance unless they changed it in the last couple years.

I don't think it would've changed the play call besides adding maybe 2 yards to the slants.. It may have slightly changed Bama's defense which could've turned it into a roll out run for Watson with Scott and Renfrow blocking for him.

Re: I have a question about the pass interference call against

Jan 13, 2017, 12:56 PM

I was wrong.

The rulebook states: "When the ball is snapped on or inside the Team B
17-yard line and outside the Team B two-yard line, and the
spot of the foul is on or inside the two-yard line, the penalty
from the previous spot shall place the ball at the two-yard
line, first down (A.R. 7-3-8-XIV)."

So, as long as the penalty occurred inside the 2 yard line, the ball would be placed on the 2.

The refs made the right call, the announcers didn't***

Overlooked is DW's punt. It flipped the field and we never

Jan 13, 2017, 10:21 AM

never looked back from that point on.

Agree, that was the turning point for the momentum shift.

1. Leggett's acrobatic catch on final drive
2. Renfrow's first TD
3. Renfrow's second TD
4. Renfrow tackle after fumble recovery
5. Cain's run after screen pass
6. Williams' leaping catch on final drive
7. Watson's tip toe tight rope TD
8. Watson's run and Superman leap to set up #9.
9. Gallman's TD
10. Williams' TD

Please tell me letting Watson kneel on it wasn't the reason

Jan 13, 2017, 12:21 PM

The onside kick call was pretty dang ballsy. We don't get the ball there and they are within range to throw a hail mary into the endzone. I really hope the reason wasn't just to let Watson get a victory formation. Please tell me that they had seen something in Bama's special teams that let us know we would get it. (Bama's front line immediately went back like they expected squib kick and not onsides.)

To me the biggest play of the game was by far Renfrow's tackle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No way that was the reason...

Jan 13, 2017, 4:43 PM

I gave it a lot of thought before we kicked off... how do we keep Bama from making a long return? Kick it out of bounds and give it to them on the 35? Squibb it and force them to handle it? Pooch kick and make them fair catch it? Any of those options would allow them to throw the ball all over the field like the Duke-Miami game last year. I don't like those because the refs miss too many calls. Then it came to me... onside kick... make Bama touch the ball in a scrum and the 1 second will run off the clock. The problem was, Huegel executed the kick to perfection and was waiting on the ground to cradle the ball after it crossed the 45. (also, bama was peeling back, so had no one close enough to recover the ball) Since he was on the ground, the clock never started... IMO, one of the few times the Officials on the field and the Replay booth got one right. Deshaun being able to kneel in victory formation was just a fortunate unintended result.

Renfrow's tackle saved the game! If they scored, they would have taken the momentum whereas our D stopped them and they only got 3 points. They looked deflated and we looked determined!

Gotta add this one!! => Jay Guillermo & Taylor Hearn turning 6’2” 319 DT Da'Ron Payne (who squats 600, bench-presses 500 per AL.com) into a HUMAN BLOCKING SLED/Dead-Body in the 4th clearing the way for Wayne Gallman’s TD to put us up 24-17. I love so many plays in that game, but this one for me is CLASSICAL, right behind the very last one, DW4=>HR’s GW. https://vine.co/v/5YvUdLaVjbv

Every time I watch that clip I get feeling Payne passed out as the ball was snapped. It seems like he falls forward and arms just go limp. Then our guys plow thru him like he's dead weight. Weirdest thing, and then it's like he suddenly wakes up at the end.

Replace your 4 and 5 with Williams and Leggett catches

Jan 13, 2017, 2:16 PM

I mean the onside kick may have been "poetic justice" and all, but I don't consider it a top 5 play of that game.

Boulware calling out the play and us making the tackle on Hurts was big.

Sorry, but the BEST play...

Jan 18, 2017, 11:28 AM

Sorry, but the BEST play was the victory formation kneel play.

The best way to end any championship game is with a knee.
