My top 3 favorite players in Clemson history

Dec 12, 2014, 6:19 PM

I go back to the early 80's.....so here we go

3. C.J Spiller - I think this guy is part of the " change " in Clemson history, especially recent history. He changed the thinking about Clemson and we should ALL be thankful for it. He truly is the only guy I have ever seen in person that you had to hold your breath every time he touched the ball. - thanks C.J'

2. Terry Allen - Alot of you younger fans don't remember him. But this guy was a BOSS. Clemson football was so much fun to watch when he was here. The guy IMO, was a true RB. Thank you Terry, you are a Clemson legend.

1. Grady Jarrett - I know so of you may say WHAT? But look, this is my list and I will put whoever I see fit. Any of you know what the definition of a Clemson man is? Well, Look it up and you will find Grady. I love this guy and stand strong on this statement. Grady Jarrett is my favorite player in Clemson Football history... - thanks Grady for being a Clemson man!

Go Tigers!

Charlie Whitehurst, 4-0 vs coots
Duane Coleman, see Tenn Game
Spiller, his senior year was a thing of beauty to watch.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Spiller's presser announcing he was coming back for year 4

Dec 12, 2014, 6:27 PM

Was akin to the press conference in Rocky IV when they set the date. In Russia. On Christmas. Cue musical montage.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Boss? You are from the 80's

Dec 12, 2014, 6:25 PM

Agree with Spiller and can see the case for Jarrett. I'm too young to remember Terry Allen so I'm going to insert Woody Dantzler. He was ahead of his time. In today's game he would put up ungodly numbers. He was a legit Heisman candidate. That alone tells you how good he was.

1). Michael Dean Perry

3). C J Spiller

I remember Allen well, and would definitely put Woody

near the top of the list. I like Rod-ney too!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

James Davis has to get at least a mention.

Dec 12, 2014, 6:32 PM

If he doesn't buy into splitting time with Spiller, CJ goes elsewhere. The unselfishness of a great player paved the way for our renaissance.

Good point

Dec 12, 2014, 6:36 PM

I always forget about Spiller almost transferring. Now he is the biggest ambassador for Clemson there is.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly, I've always said JD was probably one of the most

Dec 12, 2014, 6:38 PM [ in reply to James Davis has to get at least a mention. ]

important recruits we landed to help lead that change. Dabo was responsible for getting CJ but I'd say JD probably sealed the deal. The rest, as they say, is history.

James Davis marked the beginning of Clemsons return to relev

Dec 13, 2014, 7:02 AM [ in reply to James Davis has to get at least a mention. ]

JD did us a lot of favors .
1. He became a Tiger and was a really good runner.
2. Pretty selfless behavior which made Spiller an option and set the tone for our athletes being more cooperative than it would seem we should expect.
3. Both he and the tone he set permitted still further progress in recruiting which may have included the coaching level.

Dantzler is listed by some as a favorite and I think a lot of him. Had he just a bit more talent around him, especially on the line, he would have been even better and M. Vick might not have become the star he has been. Poor guy pretty much carried the team on his back with only a little bit of help.

But, as to the question: I would have a hard time listing three favorite players. We've had more than our fair share of like able capable guys.

This is so hard! Agree with previous posters so here are my favs.

May I add a two-fer from my home town? The Bruise Brothers - William and Michael Dean Perry.

My all time favorite is Tajh Boyd. Record holder, tough as nails physically, came back for his Senior season, pure class on and off the field. A true Clemson man. Love this guy!

3. Brian Dawkins: the guy put Clemson on the map in the NFL and anytime some Yankee up north where I live bashes southern football or Clemson I reference B-Dawkins and it ends that conversation.

2. Jaron Brown - this one is for me. Why? The guy was a machine and every long TD play by Spiller, Watkins, Ford, etc you will see Jaron in some guys face blocking 60 yds down the field. Guy straight harassed dudes.

1. CJ Spiller - Exceptional talent that took Clemson to the next level. Came back for his senior year and we rode him the entire year. ACCCG is why I named my son Cooper James so I can call him CJ!

1) CJ Spiller. The kick returns against the coots were simply beautiful.
2) Woody Dantzler. How many games did you watch on the edge of your seat because you didn't know what he would do next that wowed you?
3) Spencer Shuey. Guy fought to get his starting spot against guys much much higher rated. He was also tough as a coffin nail with a mean streak. Braxton Miller still checks to make sure he isn't under his bed.

Dec 12, 2014, 8:05 PM

1. Jeff Bryant
#99 started 4 years, played all 4 DL positions, lived in the backfield, saved the NC with the lateral recovery, and is the most underrated star in Tiger history. 12 year Seahawk starter.
2. The JUDGE
Best pure FB player I ever saw in Tiger uniform, period.
3. Anthony Simmons
A machine at LB. Looked like there were 3 of him on field.
4. Terry Kinard
A wizard FS who had best ball skills I have seen at Clemson and patrolled secondary like a cobra.
5. Dawk
A beast of a safety that hit like a truck playing on some lukewarm teams.
Honorable mention
MD Perry, Levon, Ed McDaniel, CJ, Terry Allen, Steve Fuller, Delton Hall, Dexter Davis, Sammy, Grady

Re: My top 3 favorite players in Clemson history

Dec 12, 2014, 9:22 PM

I'm old school from the 80's but I gotta lead with C.J. No other player has done more for Clemson on an off the field. 2nd would be Tajh Boyd. Class act all around.

Last but not least, Rodney Williams. Probably not the most popular choice but all he did was win. Nothing fancy but got the job done. Loved watching him run the option.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree about Rodney

Dec 12, 2014, 9:33 PM

He was horrible throwing the ball but running the option he was better than anything GaTech has seen. Like you said, all he did was win. I'll always think that he had the best game ever in a losing performance when he played against NC State in (I think) 88. Broke the NCAA record for most pass attempts in a half and completed nearly every one of them. If only Tracy Johnson hadn't dropped that 4th down pass there's no telling what would have happened that season.

1) CJ Spiller - Mr. Excitement everytime he touched the ball.

2) Sammy Watkins - Same reason as #1.

3) Terry Kinard - He was so good his Senior year, opposing teams rarely threw in his direction, and he made them pay whenever they did.

Honorable Mention: Mike Eppley - One of the most underrated QBs in Clemson history. Got no press due to the probation years, but he was solid as a rock, and also point guard on the BB team.
