Victory: A Mechanic's Triumph over Electricians

If you work in industry, you may be familiar with these stereotypes:

electricians = smart
mechanics = dumb

It's usually true.

Today we had a God-awful noise coming from one of our 250HP dual stage turbine pumps for our process water. It was so loud, that even with earplugs, you couldn't stand next to it. It was still working, but nobody felt good about it surviving the weekend.

The mechanics listened to the vibration and identified an inner race defect on the top motor bearing. The electricians scoffed at this idea and told us that we were full of crap and so forth and so on. The entire time we were replacing the motor they were running their mouths and talking ish. "you guys are retards" "its always the pump".... I suggested that they stop talking crap in case they turn out to be wrong so they don't look like #######. They didn't listen.

We changed the motor and when we started it up, it was whisper quiet.

I walked over to the electrical guys and said, "what are yall waiting on? Start it up."

Defeated, they lowered their heads and said, "it IS running".

I slapped one of them on the back and said, "oh, cool", and just walked off.

Man that felt good.

">R... Electricians are know-it-alls and for once, they were wrong. I took the high road, but also managed to shove their nose in it.

***When I say electricians and mechanics, it's a general term for electrical folks (engineers, techs, etc) and mechanics are (mech. engineers, mechanics, maintenance engineers, etc.)

Old craftsmen have learned though experience. When engineers get enough experience to fully functional in the field they are moved to the office to design and management positions. That's the same with architects. It's also the plight of those who have to deal with DHEC/EPA inspectors along with the city and county inspectors.

About the time you get them trained some paper pushing askhole promotes them to become his office slave and sends you another fresh hired rookie and expects you to train this one too. It makes me want to go postal on the guys that run those offices.

Anyway, I never took it out on the young engineers and architects I tried my best to help them without teaching them enough to get them promoted. It would work on the dumber ones or those that enjoyed the field.

Meanwhile, the industrial engineers are agonizing over

ME (30 years)... ^^^^ that right thar is funnay! ^^^^

It happens a lot more than you think.
