Unfortunately for Nikki and you conservatives here, we do not have a capitalistic (demand) economy here. We have a mixed economy - some demand and some planned.

And thank goodness that we do. How would you like it if the fire department showed up at you on-fire house and sadly informed you that they could not put the fire out because they did not have a (for profit) contract with you.

Actually there has never been a purely capitalistic (demand) economy, just as there has never been a purely communistic (planned) economy. All real economies are a more - or less - mixture of the two. And today, most economies are moving towards the middle - some sort of balanced mix of demand and planned economies. The only real question is where is that balance for each society - and that decision is up to each society.

America, for example, has a number of goods and services that are provided for (at least partially) by the government (planned). fire and police protection, national defense, highways, education, etc. AND a number of other goods and services are regulated for the public good - utilities for example.

So Nikki's (and some of y'all's) belief that capitalism works best and will solve all of our economic problems is a bit inaccurate and simplistic.

I am all for a demand economy where open competition can provide the best possible goods and services for the lowest possible price, but there are many instances where we don't have open competition - and there are some industries where that competition just doesn't work to provide the best services or the lowest prices. In these regards we can use some planning to best provide for the American people.

pooling resourses for fire, police, and military is well

Feb 13, 2021, 5:30 PM [ in reply to Re: Nikki ]

within the principles of capitalism. Capitalism increases competition and the number one benefactor is the consumer. If I can make a product better and cheaper than my competition then you will buy my product.

There are close to 200 countries in the world. Which socialist country would you rather live in.

In fact capitalism allows our public resources to be the best in the world.

How the hell are government run police, fire, and military departments a pooling of resources ? And how in the world is that capitalism ? Which private individuals own the capital involved ? Who is making the profits ? Where is the competition for customers ??

BTW, I never mentioned socialism. I talked about a mixed economy - just like the one we have had in the USA for decades and decades. Of the 200 countries in the world almost every one has a mixed economy.
