Looks like TEXAS Longhorn Band may need to learn to play a new Fight Song!

Jun 13, 2020, 9:27 AM

Saying, their “The Eyes of Texas” fight song is being hijacked by the social justice justices..

this being just one of the many demands being made for cultural changes @ U of Texas or else the recruiting process of football & other sports players will be held up so to hurt the overall sports program.

Maybe they can lease “The YELLOW Rose of Texas.

I am not familiar with the song...why is it objectionable?

Jun 13, 2020, 9:32 AM

Similarly, I wonder how many Texas fans know anything about Ben Tillman, or what the name of our honors college was until yesterday?

Seems like an overreaction to me

Jun 13, 2020, 9:41 AM

but they're upset because the song originated as part of a minstrel show that featured white UT students in blackface.

Yellow Rose of Texas is actually worse in terms of racism

The earliest known version is found in Christy's Plantation Melodies #2, a songbook published under the authority of Edwin Pearce Christy in Philadelphia in 1853. Christy was the founder of the blackface minstrel show known as the Christy's Minstrels. Like most minstrel songs, the lyrics are written in a cross between a parody of a generic creole dialect historically attributed to African-Americans and standard American English. The song is written in the first person from the perspective of an African-American singer who refers to himself as a "darkey," longing to return to "a yellow girl" (that is, a light-skinned, or bi-racial woman born of African/African-American and European-American progenitors).

Tiger Rag was composed by a band named Dixieland Jass Band

Jun 13, 2020, 10:37 AM

in 1917. Do they have to change their name or Clemson have to drop Tiger Rag?

That's really going to bum me out if they choose to change their song. That's heavy. I hope I can sleep tonight. This world is falling apart. You can see where were are headed.
This country is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling, volcanoes.. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

Like Ghostbusters

You would lose sleep if Tiger Rag was to be changed.***

I've never been able quite get the lyrics to match up with our version of the music. Other than the obvious part of course
