Great poll on Athlon web site - Best coaching jobs in

Apr 14, 2015, 4:46 PM

the SEC. Love the first part of the first line under USC (ranked 8th by the way). Also the end.

"South Carolina has little to no history of success but has shown it has the makings of a powerful program. The fan support has always been excellent despite traditionally bad football teams. The stadium is one of the best in the nation, the athletic department has proven it wants to provide the necessary support financially and the recruiting base is fertile. However, the complete lack of high-level winning keeps this job from being elite. The Gamecocks were the most polarizing program in this poll, getting one first-place vote, a third-place vote and five votes of 10th or worse."

So you're saying Spurrier would make more money coaching

I dislike them but they do have great support for a perennial doormat. I give them that. Of course I attribute it to them being delusional

They are the same kind of people who would continue.....

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

LOL..."the stadium is one of the best in the nation" ?!?!?

Apr 14, 2015, 4:55 PM

The writer lost all credibility with that rediculous statement.

Their fan base creates great atmosphere at WB but the stadium itself is a concrete monstrosity in a rundown, ugly ### area.

Yea....

I'm particularly impressed by all of the mullets, the chicken in a dress, the fake smoke, the cheesy high school entrance, and especially their traditional third quarter mass exodus.

Better poll would be guessing which bozo picked it #1.

I would agree...except that the stadium, while large, is more than a bit of a dump. And given the school's physical location and lack of upper-echelon academics, there's a bit of an...element there that tends to scare the really good kids away.

South Carolina's a good gig. It pays well and you do get a very large fan base that doesn't have a lot of expectations, even if they do tend to bail on you at halftime.

Against, that, you have to balance that against the fact that you're playing UGA, UF, Tennessee, and Mizzou every year, and you're sharing a state with another big-time program like Clemson. It's a tough, tough place to win consistently at and it does tend to draw in older coaches like Holtz and Spurrier whose coaching stock and energy maybe wasn't what it used to be.

Who follows Spurrier? Don't know, but given their recent run on JUCO's and the overall run-down talent level of their roster - along with the fact that UT is now clearly on the rise again - I do think it might be a bit of a tough sell to a younger hot-name coach. Unless they're willing to roll the dice with a younger guy already on staff like we did with Dabo, it's a full-on rebuild for them. Probably with another older guy who's been out of the game for awhile.

Two things:

1. Spurrier
2. An unusually strong run of Palmetto State players with premium talent and Gamecock leanings

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"gamecock leanings" = Rock Hill booster

Apr 15, 2015, 12:18 AM

And jobs for key player's dads. The instate talent is a little lower and maybe since Whitneygate the cash isn't flowing as freely.
They also lost Lawing and Ellis.
