You would think they would learn

Aug 17, 2014, 5:46 PM

One of the headlines on ESPN right now is "FSU No. 1, but SEC rules AP poll." They probably just used last year's headline and added the part about FSU. Here are some facts about last year's Preseason AP poll:

Number of team's in the top 5 who ended the year in the top 5:
0

Teams from outside the SEC in the top 10:
5
How many of those teams ended the season in the top-15:
All 5
Final record of the 5 top-10 teams from outside the SEC:
57-10 (won 85% of their games)

Teams from the SEC in the top 10:
5
How many of those teams ended the season in the top-15:
2
Final record of the 5 top-10 teams from the SEC:
43-21 (won 67% of their games)

And then comes the inevitable argument that the SEC didn't do as well because they had to play other teams from the SEC. Turns out the teams from outside the SEC that started the season in the top-10 went 21-4 in nonconference games. The teams from the SEC went 18-6 with a significantly lower overall strength of schedule.

SEC has the best bowl record year in and year out. What are you trying to say?
Yeah Clemson has wins over the SEC but that more tells how good Clemson has become then the SEC being overrated.

And it's the AP poll who cares what the media says?
The AP means nothing and will continue to mean nothing.

And last year's results have no baring on this season

I was accepted at CU but chose USC because it was a better school for me. If you check my posts you will find that a young man I am very familiar with began his CU undergrad studies this weekend. I was very happy because I felt CU was where he fit best. He was accepted at USC, has family ties there, but we all feel he made the correct choice.

The best schools in the SEC would be average at best in the ACC. Rank them however you wish.

Florida and UGA are the top public schools - Vanderbilt is the top private school.

#90 Georgia Tech
#94 Georgia
#117 Virginia Tech
#128 Miami
#158 Syracuse
#163 Clemson
#167 North Carolina State
#198 Pittsburgh
#548 Louisville

Vandy would be just at the top 5 and UGA and UF would be just above average in the ACC. All rank in the top 100.

Exactly! Before Louisville joined, our low spot in the ACC was FSU. All SEC schools (minus the three the mutt mentioned) were way below the noles. Football recruits do NOT go SEC for the academics.

Please tell me where I'm wrong.

I'll admit the SEC has higher rated football teams on average.

Your post makes no sense. Who are the apples and who are the oranges that i'm comparing? I'm comparing all the teams that were ranked in the preseason top 10.

Let me take away all the big numbers I used and try to make the main point of my post simpler and more coot-friendly. There were three teams in the preseason top 10 last year that were objectively overrated. All three of those teams were from the SEC. Understand?

If you are starting a topic that is unrelated to Clemson, please post it in the "Other Teams and Sports" forum. Also be very careful not to post intentionally inflammatory posts that are just meant to cause trouble. This will not be tolerated and you will be banned. Please break this down by conference, instead of making this SEC vs. Everyone else. Highlight the conference that the "teams from outside the SEC" are from, and your biased framing of these statistics won't seem concrete in the least.
