That would be a disaster. They would be begging for Gus back.

Leave it to Auburn

That's their plan? They can't be that dumb, can they?
They pay Gus Malzhan 21 million to walk and replace him with Kevin Steele? If that's true they are the biggest football morons in the country.
They must not know Muschamp is available.

He is a nasty animal for sure. I guess the reference from Dabo got lost in cyberspace.Hiring Steele is a worse move than the Bama fan killing the trees in Toomer's Corner!

AU will need to get any future triple option teams off the schedules. I think a moderately successful high school coach would be a better pick than KS.

I have a different perspective on Kevin Steele

Most folks here remember him as a former Clemson DC.
My first and biggest impression from Kevin Steele is as head coach at Baylor in the early 2000s. He was a flaming, volcanic disaster!
If you hate Auburn, you want them to elevate Kevin Steele. He'll last no more than 2 years. Not head coach material.

What I heard, and I can’t remember which podcast it was on, was that one of his defensive assistants, Travis Williams I believe, is supposed to be the real deal, so they would be hiring Steele with the intention that he groom that assistant to take over in a few years.

The last time KS was a head coach, it didn't end well.

Between 1999 and 2002, his Baylor team posted a win/loss record of 9 - 36. That's correct, over a four year period, his Baylor team won a whopping total of nine games including just one (1) game in the Big XII.

Not only was his record bad, but the way it ended at Baylor was a monument to how totally obtuse the guy is.

I read rumors that he is at least a serious candidate. I also read rumors that Lane Kiffin is a serious candidate.
I find both, especially Steele, hard to believe. I think Auburn wants to make a "big splash" hire. I just don't think Steele is even close to that. Disclaimer: I first learned about Steele when he came to FSU way back when Bobby was still the HC and Mickey Andrews was DC. Specuilation was he was being groomed to be Bobby's successor. After one year, he left for Alabama saying, "He wanted to be closer to his parents" who were aging. He left Bama after 1 or two years. Didn't follow him closely after that. I know he did go to Clemson and coached himself right out of a job in that infamous WV game.
I think Freeze is a serious candidate, but highly controversial. A couple of days ago, somewhere, I listed my three guesses as to who their A list was: Freeze, Sarkesian and Cristobal.
I may put Kiffin in that list. But, I still have Steele on the C list at best.
