What's your favorite Masters memory?

Nov 12, 2020, 4:38 PM

For me, it was seeing Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Greg Norman playing a practice round. As a middle schooler, they seemed like they were larger than life. (Postscript: this was also when you could stand in line and buy practice round "stickers". Lol)

Almost favorite memory: My son stubbornly wanting to camp out on the boring 17th Green on the Saturday of Phil's famous charge. I at least heard the roars haha.

Having lunch with Gene Sarazen on the Wednesday or Thursday (can't remember)in the clubhouse dining room. We heard some wonderful stories and I realized how much Mr. Sarazen loved coming down and hitting a ball off the first tee just enjoying the atmosphere.

Not Charles, but have had lunch with him a few times too!

Funny, but 20 years to the day that I had lunch with Mr. Sarazen I was having breakfast at the Holiday Inn at Washington Road and I-20, and as I got up from my table I say him walking through the lobby. I went over to him and told him that 20 years ago I had lunch with him and named the other gentlemen that were with us. He acted like he remembered and was very gracious, although I am sure he didn't remember.

Nov 14, 2020, 10:05 AM

music was the year that they had words put to it, and had Dave Loggins singing it. That was quickly scrapped, and they went back to the instantly recognizable instrumental version. No words are needed to describe Augusta National. If you have ever been there, the views do all the describing that ever needs doing.

The world's largest, most exquisitely manicured lawn and garden complex, with a heck of a golf course in it. What I remembered the first time I ever set foot on the place was that it looked like they had sodded all the way up to the very base of the pine trees with perfect grass, no visible roots! Beautiful.

Walking alongside Jack and Arnie during their practice rounds and actually chatting a bit with both. Arnie told some pretty good jokes. ‘76 I believe. Raymond Floyd was knocking everything stiff and won the tournament going away. However, my favorite moments were listening to Trevino while he was chipping balls and talking nonstop. The guy was hilarious. Unfortunately, Lee hated the course for several reasons. His game of hitting low fades just never translated well there. It is a tradition unlike any other for sure. Total outdoor cathedral. Love that place!

Nov 12, 2020, 9:17 PM

I watched that on TV. The only Sunday at Augusta that I experienced in person was in 99, stood on Washington Rd with a little sign and scalped a badge for $100. Closest story similar to yours was the Gene Sarazen thing they had for a few years at Chateau Elan in Braselton GA. Went to that a couple times... wasn't crowded and you could stand there 15 feet from Jack and hear him shoot the breeze before teeing off.

When I was 13 years old, my grandfather gave my mom 2 tickets for Thursday and Friday and she took me out of school for two days and we drove down from Greenville. That was awesome. We followed Arnold for a while and saw Jack as well. That was 86. We watched the weekend from home of course and loved Jack winning it all.

Re: What's your favorite Masters memory?

Nov 12, 2020, 9:33 PM

Easy for me. 1974, I was in grad school. My roomie had two tickets. His dad would take a friend on Thursday and Friday, then give the tickets to his son for the weekend. He had an aunt who lived in Augusta. We drove up from Valdosta on Friday night and spent all day Saturday and Sunday. Walked the whole course on Thursday morning so I could see every hole in person. Spent most of the day in the stands behind the 12th tee.

I actually enjoyed the 14th hole the most. It is the most under-rated hole on the entire course.

We were on the spectator mound by the 17th green when Gary player hit his approach shot a foot from the hole to take a two stroke lead and win the tourney.

Re: What's your favorite Masters memory?

Nov 12, 2020, 9:38 PM

This occurred many tears ago. I was near the No. 10 tee box. Cary Middlecoff approached the tee. Middlecoff was known for imbibing a "LITTLE" and apparently had satisfied his thirst at some point before arriving at No. 10. As he was preparing to tee off, I said to my friend, "he's going to hit that ball in the woods on the right". And, indeed, he did, not just on the edge of the fairway, but in the deep woods.

I don't know how he was able to do it but his second shot was back in the middle of the fairway. I followed him down the fairway and believe it or not he finished with a bogie.

For many years I had a friend who gave me a ticket and then a friend with Dunlop gave me a ticket for many years. I probably attended between 15 - 20 Masters and never paid a dime.

That's interesting Joe! I knew Dr. Middlecoff and had lunch with him on many occasions in his hometown at Memphis Country Club. Whenever I saw him at the club or had lunch with him, he always had a martini in his hand. He was a very nice man, and I kind of felt sorry for him as he seemed to not have much interests other than hanging around the club. I think it was also about this time (1988) that his house burned and all of his golf memorabilia went up in flames. I never saw him pick up a club and understood that although healthy he no longer cared to play golf.

Nov 13, 2020, 7:05 AM

had just walked up to the green on 17 I think, when this tall blonde in a fish net type dress and high heeled shoes (platform type, yes, people dressed to the hilt back in the day} walked out in the middle of the fairway about 200 yards from the green. She had a pen and a pad and she yelled,"Gregggggggg!" one time. He looked back down the fairway as she raised the pen and pad requesting an autograph. Norman waved for her to come on up to the green and she immeditately stretched out an arm towards him and wiggled her forefinger at Mr. Norman to run back down the hill and come to her. Well boys .....He did just that to the roar of the crowd.

Spud ..... that was what Tiger's girlfriend, Lindsey Vonn, was wearing there a few years ago, but I don't think Norman was playing by that time. My first Masters was 1962 which Arnie won. I was there, maybe Friday, when he was playing with Chi Chi and of course Chi Chi was having a good time pretending like all of Arnie's applause was for him. Many years later I got to know Arnie fairly well and played golf with him just after his 70th birthday in 2000 at Yeaman's Hall in Charleston. After golf and lunch at the club I drove him to his plane at the airport and he invited me aboard to show me his Citation 10. About a mile after I left, I noticed he had left his navy blue blazer with pink lining in my car. I turned around and took it back before he took off .......... should have kept it ........ but one memory that stands out was 1982, when I was there on Sunday. I, like everyone else, was pulling against Craig Stadler as he choked away his lead on the back nine. I made my way to the 18th green, leaving Stadler on 16. As I recall, Dan Pohl had already finished. When Stadler's bogey on 16 was posted, the gallery at 18, widely revered as the most respectful and composed anywhere, erupted in cheers. I was disgusted. At that moment, I started pulling for Stadler. I watched him finish, then sprinted ahead for the playoff, and rejoiced when he pulled it off on number 10. I have been a Stadler fan ever since.

In hindsight, this memory is not quite as strong as I would have thought. My hubby and I were standing close to the tee box on 14 when Tom Watson walked up. He took a few practice swings, then looked me straight in the eyes and winked and smiled at me. Honey hush!!

Several years later, my all time favorite, hands down memory was really an indirect one. I gave my mom my pass since she had never been before. My husband took her everywhere and bought her anything she even glanced at. Two weeks later she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer. She always told her doctors, nurses, etc. about her Masters' experience. She loved it and loved telling the stories about her walk through history.

She passed the following year, so having such a pleasant event to remember during those terrible treatment days helped her get through that agony!

Being there on Sunday when Jack won in 86. The roars that echoed around the golf course were legendary. I said then that nothing would top that as a sporting event for me as Jack was my idol. However, being in Levi Stadium in 2018 with my wife for our 40th Anniversary was better.

Getting to take one of my best friends to the double round on Sunday in 2006 where we walked the entire course during the morning round then moved strategically around the course to watch the main groups up close at the ropes by sitting in vacant seats. It was awesome.

My first Masters was in 1977. We were standing next to the fairway bunker on the first hole. A young man I had never heard of, who was playing in his first Masters, hit his tee shot into that bunker. He calmly walks up to the ball with a fairway iron in his hand, and hits the ball to within two or three feet of the hole. This young man's name was Seve Ballesteros.
