Fellow T-netters, I have a problem.

Sep 11, 2012, 3:28 PM

I hate reading. I read t-net all day as well as many other sports sites, but it PAINS me to pick up a book.

I hate this about myself. I think its because my generation in general is over stimulated and growing up I never really adopted reading as a hobby.

I want to start reading and am trying to find a good place to start (I've read the classic in high school/college because I had too, and I've read some christian books as well)

I want to try something non-religious. Maybe fiction. Any thoughts/advice?

Thanks in advance.

Awesome author. Keeps your intrest through the entire book and spins a very good tale.

I was/am the same way. Discovered I just need a topic that I am actually interested in reading about. I've got a lot of enjoyment out of reading The Accountant's Story which was written by Pablo Escobar's brother, telling his side of life. I've also really enjoyed The Big Short which gives a deeper look into the whole real estate bubble and subsequent burst, and how so many people made a ton of money off of it (seeing the burst come) while giving me an education on what happened.

oh, also... I started reading on my iphone in 5 minute intervals during downtime I'd ordinarily do nothing-- waiting on the elevator, using the bathroom, commercial breaks during games, etc. I've read 6 books in the past few months, which is more than I've done in years prior to that point.

IMHO, Don Winslow is the best of the new "pulp" writers out there. You cannot go wrong with Elmore Leonard, James Lee Burke, Charles Willeford either. Their books kick a**!

Sep 11, 2012, 3:32 PM

I have begun reading lately.

But I read ALL non fiction.

Started with Lone Survivor (Marcus Lutrells book re: Navy SEALS)

Then Unbroken: Story of an olympic athlete who went down in a WWII airplane crash and spent years in Japanese prison camp.

American Sniper; Another SEAL book

Just finished No Easy Day: Story of the Bin Laden Raid. I read it in two sittings.

Just read SOMETHING!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Super long book, but I couldn't put it down...

11/22/63 By Steven King

I could not stop reading.

Also, I'm in the middle of the Zombie Combat Manual... I've got the firearms for long range, but I've got to work on my short range combat for those shuffling undead! :P But seriously though, read 11/22/63

Unbroken by the Seabiscuit author.

True story of an olympian, WWII vet and POW. Stranded 47 days on a raft before being a POW. Great story and true

John Grishham, Tom Clancy - read something.....

Sep 11, 2012, 3:43 PM

with a real plot about a subject you have some idea about and it should hook you. If all you've ever read are academic books then no wonder you don't like reading.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No not necessarily academic... Here are a few of that I like

Sep 11, 2012, 3:47 PM

- Started "Extremely loud and incredibly close" - was loving it, but it was on a friends Ipad that I was borrowing.. again the ipad may have helped.

- Loved "the curious incident of the dog in the night"
- liked "the road" okay...
- Liked I, Robot a lot (nothing like the movie, check it out...)
- liked brave new world
- like lord of the flies
- liked "hitchhikers guide to the galaxy"

So I don't know... I guess I like weird, semi-apocolyptic, semi-scifi ??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here are some books like that that you may like

Sep 11, 2012, 3:55 PM

I Am Legend (Yes, the book the movie was modeled after)
Cell - Steven King (notice a pattern here?)
Farenheit 451 - Ray Bradberry
Under the Dome - Steven King

I never really have any problem reading young adult books either. If don't mind those, you might like Hatchet and Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Read both in middle/highschool. Loved those...***

I'm a Stephen King fan, and I think Cell would appeal

Sep 11, 2012, 3:58 PM [ in reply to Here are some books like that that you may like ]

to people who haven't read many/any his books, however i think you'd have to have an 'acquired taste' to appreciate Under The Dome...

Maybe Duma Key, or one of his many collections of short stories, though there are several WTF's in those, too

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm still trying to read the Dark Tower series.

Sep 11, 2012, 4:04 PM

I can't seem to get past the first half of the first book.

So far is isn't as good as "Walk This Way" was. I'm not a big reader either, but I did make it through all 7 of the Dark Tower books.

Sep 11, 2012, 3:50 PM

You think you know the story. You don't.

After the first installment of the movie series I refused to wait for part two and went to the library, in my house, and rediscovered a copy I had bought at a yard sale many years ago. I was retired so I blasted through it in four days.

It became one of my favorites and I was sorely disappointed with the movie.

for me. I read The Hobbit when I was 12 and the LOTR trilogy at 14. I think I've read those at least 3-4 times each.

lol - you sound exactly like me. I read all the time, but not books. In the past I read a lot of the Clive Cussler books about Dirk Pitt, but that was about it. I am actually trying (notice - "trying") to read a biography of Nikola Tesla, which is very interesting, but I'm only about 1/4 thru it and have renewed it already. :) My wife got 10 books at that time and read them all while I've managed 1/4 of that book. It just ain't right I tell ya'.

Sep 11, 2012, 4:15 PM

Lots of good suggestions here, and I concur with them.

Keep at it and you'll find a genre you like. For me, it's biographies. I'm a computer nerd, so I liked Linus Torvalds' biography. Another good one is "E=mc^2, A Biography of the World's Most Famous Equation".

In any case, I'd say pick a book and if you find it difficult to get interested in it, put it down & choose a different one. Keep doing it until you find something you can't put down. Try anything & everything until you find the subject/author/genre that hooks you.

Sep 11, 2012, 4:29 PM

First book is The Archers Tale. Read that one and you'll want to get the next two (Vagabond and Heretic).

Great historical fiction. Also try Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet.

All of these books are beefy, but you'll fly through them.
