It seems there should be a penalty for taking a practice FG

Oct 16, 2016, 7:30 PM

I can understand if the timeout is called very close to the snap. But yesterday the time out seemed to be called well in advance of the snap and the kicker deliberately took a practice kick after everyone else had relaxed and were backing off.

I know it didn't matter in this case, but i'm surprised the practice kick would not be illegal. I would have thought it would be unsportsmanlike like conduct.

Any rules experts have any insight? (P.S. this is not a complaint i'm just curious)

I actually thought the "practice" kick planted doubt ...

... he pushed it and barely snuck it inside the upright.

Maybe I was just being overly hopeful, but I felt like that kick hurt his concentration and planted a seed of doubt in his mind after he had already missed twice on the day.

Not sure what the rule is, but I didn't think he gained any advantage ... he just wasted the "good" kick.

I figured the State kicker had one good kick left in him...

"IF" they chose to do so, the Ref could have called them for a "Delay of the Game" penalty.

Hardly ever called.

Ref almost got drilled. would it have been unsportsmanlike?***
