“Benton, a reserve linebacker for Alabama, has been friends with Ross since childhood, played with him in high school and saw Ross burn Notre Dame for those two long touchdowns.

Now, those two will be on opposing teams for the first time.

Recently, they had a friendly argument about who would win if Alabama and Clemson played each other. And in the locker room following the Tide’s Orange Bowl win over Oklahoma, Benton repeated something he told Ross back during the recruiting process, knowing at the time that Ross was strongly considering Clemson.

“He’s a good player and has always been a good player,” Benton said. “But like I told him back before he went to Clemson, ‘If you go to Clemson, we’re gonna whoop your ### in the championship game.'””
