I’m not usually a grammar Nazi

Nov 21, 2020, 3:01 PM

Nor do I make a big deal out of people that have a less than impressive grasp of the English language, but I do cringe when I see people posting on here that say they are graduates of Clemson that don’t understand the difference between then & than or two too & to or my gawd there they’re & their!

Unfortunately some of my postings make those mistakes also because I tend to voice dictate because I’m usually doing other things while I’m on here posting. Ergo I’m not usually a grammar Nazi

But I really have a problem with today’s headline. What ESPN keeps reporting and what people are posting on the Internet and what is even posted on this website is irritating the hell out of me!

Today’s game with Florida state was not postponed!

A game gets postpone because there’s lightning or weather conditions or a bomb threat!

Today’s game was canceled and tentatively rescheduled!

There is a huge difference in postponed and rescheduled and especially postponed and canceled!

Frankly, the ACC is at fault here. Clemson followed the protocols that were established by the conference before the season started. If a school is following the protocols another school should not be able to unilaterally opt out of a game at the last minute. The conference, if its’ leadership had any ######## fortitude, which we know this conference has never had, would have stepped in and told Florida State you must play the game or forfeit.

Seeing as the ACC did not do that Clemson should be compensated in some way or at the very least if the game is to be replayed Florida state should be forced to travel to Clemson and this game now be played as a home game at Clemson. That would be at the very minimum the right thing for The ACC to do. But as we are all painfully aware the ACC never does the right thing when Clemson is involved. I’m willing to bet this would’ve been handled differently had UNC or Duke been scheduled to play Florida State today.

LOL. You misspelled grammer, moran.

You have an (R) so you can go back and edit “a game gets postpone”

Your nit doesn’t appear to be grammar-related though. Just terminology.

You misspelled grammar

https://www.google.com/search?q=grammar+definition&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari

https://www.google.com/search?q=grammer+or+grammar&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari

And the D got left off of postpone because like I said in my OP I tend to voice dictate and little things like that happens when you voice dictate and don’t carefully edit before posting.

Which is why I stipulated that I’m not usually a grammar Nazi because I know I make these mistakes as well. It’s the point being made that matters. When people only point out the minor mistakes in the grammar rather than trying to engage in conversation about the topic it says more about the person making the criticism don’t you think? <img border=">

FYI I was really good friends with a bunch of swimmers when I was at Clemson 84 to 88 and I really hate to see swimming getting axed!!

Probably not. The only person that would make the kind of post you just made is someone that has their own issues. I actually feel sorry for you. You’re a sad little person. Did mommy not give you enough love when you were a little boy?

Clearly you don’t understand sarcasm or someone make an attempt to find both humor and common sense solutions For what happened today.

You're the sad one here. You talk about your fellow graduates as if they are your brother and sisters , which is fair to feel that way, but if they type something wrong by accident you kick them from your family.Perhaps they use Google voice,or have large fingers from too many chips or maybe just maybe they made an honest mistake. This world is not just consisted if college graduates,so please come down off your pedestal.

Nov 21, 2020, 6:36 PM [ in reply to Re: I’m not usually a grammar Nazi ]

Did you actually read my original post? If you did you can’t read and comprehend. Go back and read my original post. I didn’t call out anyone. I didn’t point to a single person making a mistake. I said I am not a grammar Nazi. I did point out it’s sad if people don’t know a few things that I pointed out and that is true but I also said I don’t make a big deal out of it because I make mistakes myself because I voice dictate most of my postings. You’re calling me sad for doing something that I did not do. You clearly did not read my post.

The bad grammar that I was pointing out was people saying the game is postponed. The game was not postponed. The game was canceled and rescheduled. There’s a huge difference in those two things. But ESPN and the ACC and other journalist keep saying the game was postponed. No! It was canceled.

You people seriously do not get sarcasm and are way too quick to read and not comprehend!

Well, Grammar Nazi, I just asked a poster, "What state do you live in?" I felt it was a bit too formal to ask, "In what state do you currently reside?"

Is that okay with you?

My Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary defines postpone, "to put off to a later time". If I am to believe Merriam and Webster, the Clemson/FSU game has been postponed and rescheduled at a later date.

Re: I’m not usually a grammar Nazi

Nov 21, 2020, 6:47 PM

Typically when a game is postponed it means put off for a short period of time like a weather delay. When you’re talking about canceling a game where the team is already there and scheduling for another date that’s not postponed. That’s canceled and rescheduled. Yes technically you’re using the word correctly but that’s not how it is typically used in a sports context. Do you ever watch golf? Rounds are postponed all the time because of weather delays. Earlier this year the Masters was not postponed. It was canceled and rescheduled for November. Again it’s all about context.

Re: I’m not usually a grammar Nazi

Nov 21, 2020, 7:03 PM

Dictionaries do not include reasons for postponing a game. I prefer to use the dictionary as the correct usage of a word. I thought that was what this topic was all about.

badge-ringofhonor-joe21.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’m not usually a grammar Nazi

Nov 23, 2020, 8:34 PM

The correct usage of a word depends on the context. Our FSU game was not postponed, but cancelled and tentatively rescheduled. Had we played Saturday night or Sunday, or Monday THAT would have been a postponement. As soon as the decision was made to play another weekend the game was cancelled. And considering there is a high probability that at this point the game will not be played, then postponed is by definition incorrect since postponed means the game will be played. Thus cancelled and tentatively rescheduled is correct. But Dabo has made it clear he's moving on from playing FSU this year unless they come to Clemson, but the reality is we won't need that game and Dabo wants that weekend open to rest, heal, and prepare for the Notre Dame rematch the following weekend in the ACCCG.
