I didn't read the article, but do they just take people's word that they are a smoker?

getting this vaccine ahead of anyone or any kind of transplant. I know a smoker that has had two heart transplants. Frustrates the crap out of me.

Gotta keep those cigarette taxes rolling in. NJ is the garden state, well if you like gardens of smoke stacks.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

While this decision on the face of it is very annoying, it probably makes sense. The term essential worker has morphed into including counselors conducting virtual sessions and attorneys among other examples. Unless doctors and hospitals are going to take the draconian measure to turn away smokers with symptomatic COVID, which they won't and shouldn't in my opinion, vaccinating smokers is apt to keep more hospital beds and ventilators free for others, as a smoker with COVID is more likely to end up needing a hospital bed, ICU bed and potentially a ventilator and to require that support longer than a nonsmoker.

It's frustrating and counter intuitive, but probably makes sense.

What is more frustrating is the fact that we are now finding out that there is no reserve of vaccine. Those that have received a first dose of vaccine or are soon to do so are going to be able to get a second dose. Others are probably going to have to wait to receive a first dose until production of the vaccine is ramped up. This is a massive failure of communication from the federal government and inept roll out on a federal and state level. After jacking around on the computer, my almost 90 yr old dad gets his first dose today. I'm still working on moving my mom's dose up. It's a total mess in SC.

Good post. Agree there is a line of thinking where it makes sense.

Another approach would simply tell them "You made the decision to smoke and harm your body. We are taking non-smokers who are not voluntarily harming their body in the hospital first."

"Decisions that keep the greatest number of sick people out of hospitals" for $1,000, Alex.

Seems to make sense. Lord knows we have the data now to know who is most at risk of needing oxygen and a hospital bed. Fat people, people with diabetes, old people, smokers, cancer survivors, there are all kinds of people who will use hospital resources more if they get sick. If that means giving vaccines to ####### lawyers, sobeit. Whatever groups are most likely to take up a hospital bed. This isn't a moral argument, it's practical. We do not want to end up like Brazil.

And please keep in mind, without hospital beds (AND OXYGEN), the death rate for this jumps exponentially. In Brazil there are no more hospital beds, and they're out of oxygen. They have people, nurses, providing mechanical respiration now, 24-7. They're begging for volunteers to do this, as they're out of hospital beds, and oxygen.

So yeah, give the vaccine to whoever is the most likely to end up occupying a hospital bed and needing oxygen. I don't care if that's a flaming liberal snowflake, a racist genocidal maniac, a smoker, drug addict, or what.

As a side note, I admit I haven't been following the data lately in smokers. But I know at least initial studies showed smokers were much less likely to catch covid in the first place. BUT, when they do it's much more deadly for them. Something about their lungs already being damaged so much the virus has a hard time latching on. But when it does, they're in much worse shape to recover.

Seems like this would have a substantial impact on keeping people out of ICU beds, so it seems like a pretty decent policy. People like Bengaline tend to forget that policymakers are driven by data, not by your feelings.

vaccine distribution in Florida is driven by politics and not science. My step Dad is a cancer survivor and they finally got fed up and drove to NC to get their first round.

So a 59 year old smoker gets to go ahead of a 64 year old

Jan 16, 2021, 2:46 PM [ in reply to Re: Stupid Liberal State Vaccine Policy ]

That has respiratory complications due to having half of their right lung removed from a fungal infection?
You’re real bright....

It doesn't sound like the smoker would be ahead of that person. Read your own article before you post. You're real bright....

The move to prioritize smokers over essential workers like teachers has received some criticism, though the phased rollout is in line with federal guidelines from the US Centers for Disease Control that place smoking on a list of conditions "that cause increased risk of severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19."
