He'll be gone by then, and then it's just for show. I would work more with state prosecutors to bring criminal charges against him.

I don't think she can let it go.
His actions clearly merit impeachment, and if she doesn't act it looks like she and the Dems were too weak to challenge his behavior. So even though it's pointless in practice, they're "making a statement"...exactly as they did the first time on that Ukraine call when again they basically had to call him on his BS or look like they were too weak to do it.
This time, though, it kicks the ball back to McConnell and the Senate. Will they enable the Donald one last time, and own his sins in perpetuity? Or take the opportunity to cut ties between the GOP and Donald Trump once and for all...and maybe break the party in the process?
I think that's the rationale: make the GOP own - or deal with - Donald Trump. Both options are bad.

I was/am a semi-magatard, and I'm pretty much over it already.
Hoping for the best with Biden/Harris, but expecting the worst. Either way, all I can do is sit here and ride it out, minding my own business.
It was a wild ride and very tiring.

ineligible,
Perhaps but many of them will not come out and vote Rep again. And if a specific Republican Rep or Senator vote for impeachment, they will remember that next election cycle.
The Dems are going to cost the Reps some moderate votes next election cycle or they are going to cost them some Trumper votes

Is that a real consequence?
Jan 7, 2021, 2:42 PM

Or just political grandstanding?
The 25th invocation would be a nice consequence, but I think it's far better to work quietly behind the scenes with prosecutors on a state level to get him in prison.
That sends the real message.

A) Hopefully the pressure tactic works and they invoke the 25th. B) Impeachment and conviction guarantee he can't hold office again. C) This is the way it's suppose to work. Just because we're two weeks out or there might be political consequences, doesn't mean it's not the right thing to do.

Fair enough, especially to your Point B. I just wonder if on a federal level, we just need a clean break from the idiot and let the state of NY try to lock him up.

Good Lord.
There's no way he would survive a republican primary. The pubs would need to learn a lesson from 2016 and not put 1000 people on stage and let them kill each other off until Trump is left.
We're not smart people (as a country). Give us 15 choices and we'll eff it up. Give us 3 or 4 choices, and we have a chance to get it right.
If you had a menu with 1000 kinds of pizza and 1 option for a can of sardines, sardines would win every time, despite the fact that most people hate sardines.

desperate man, with zero legitimate options remaining to hold the office, which also happens to be the most powerful office and position in the world. The power of the Presidency is immense, and he has it in his hands for two more weeks, with very little to lose during that span, and very little to check that power.
Meanwhile, what's left of the adults in the room are fleeing the White House in droves, leaving him with a small cadre of complete sycophants as the only ones left to tamp down his anti-democratic behavior. In a few days it will be Trump, Giuliani, Lin Wood, and Mike Flynn as all that remains, yet with a military, Presidential authorities, emergency powers, and more at their disposal.
Millions are buying the big lie yet today, after that disgrace from yesterday, including those very foot soldiers that participated. This wounded, cornered animal needs to be put out of its misery.

Yeah.
I do not want to see what he comes up with in the next...(quoz checks watch, curses) 13 days, 20 hours, and 3 minutes.
Good God, that's an eternity. It's been like watching a particularly vicious 6-year-old wave around his Daddy's gun for the last four years, and now the little sh!t knows he's gotta give the thing back.
I don't even wanna know what he'll do before then.

This is stupid. Let Trump keep spiraling the next two weeks. Every crazy nut bag action now is just another nail in the coffin of his legacy.
Yesterday was the turning point for most of the country who was passively following the MAGA cult.
Let them keep digging the hole deeper and don't give any more ammo for them to rally around.

No way it happens in just two weeks. That would be a very bad precedent. They have to draw up articles of impeachment, then vote on them in the House. There will be some house members who will object to stall things. Then it has to get kicked over to the Senate. They have to have a trial. Evidence has to be presented. Then there are Senators who will object. There's probably discovery rules. Trump has 1,000 lawyers already on speed dial. Just absolutely no way that happens in two weeks.

We've had enough bad precedents...for January at least
Jan 7, 2021, 2:42 PM

These things build up. I imagine Trump is either firing cabinet members, or has them on a short leash. If he fires or forces enough of them to resign, there's no way the 25th works. He'll probably put in the Maga chairman for Pickens County, SC as Sec of Defense or something. Who know who he comes up with.
Nope. Let him ride out his two weeks, and just don't listen to him if he does anything else stupid. And pray the bad guys are too busy with covid or whatever to try anything stupid themselves.

Wouldn’t the “unity” , “peace” thing to do is just chill for the next 2 weeks. Trump is gone in 2 weeks and democrats have full power. Why throw fuel on a fire now? Common sense says that’s a bad play.

Because Trump is absolutely going to run again in 2024 and if they want to save their party (or at least save their chances of winning in 2024) impeaching him removes him from any right to run again.
