I was wondering how unprecedented the SEC West
Nov 12, 2014, 3:35 PM
|
|
records are this year, so I got to huntin'. I compiled the total W-L of every division since 1992. The SEC started in 1992, the Big 12 in 1996, and the ACC, PAC-12 and Big 10 later on.
What I found, and it did not surprise me, was that the SEC West's non-divisional record is on pace to be the best ever. There are still non-division games to be played, including bowl games, so there's still work to be done to set the record.
The PAC-12 South is also having one of the best W-L years by any division in history.
Here are the Top 10 non-division records:
1. 2014 SEC West: 35-1 2. 2010 SEC West: 43-5 3. 2013 SEC West: 39-10 4. 2011 SEC West: 38-10 4. 2009 SEC West: 38-10 6. 2008 Big 12 South: 37-10 7. 2004 Big 12 South: 33-9 8. 2010 Big 12 South: 37-11 9. 2014 PAC12 South: 36-8 10. 2006 SEC East: 36-12
What does this mean? Well, one thing it points out to me is that a division with just one loss out of the division is kind of a new thing. It's not something pollsters, committees, and fans have had to deal with when trying to evaluate teams. With a record like, each team in the division is going to be playing a lot of games against teams with very good records.
I have all divisions since 1992...any questions, shoot 'em at me.

I love this little bit of ACC division trivia:
Nov 12, 2014, 3:42 PM
|
|
By non-division record, the best ACC division yet was the 2006 Atlantic, which posted a 33-15 record. The winner of that division? Wake Forest, of course!

Nov 12, 2014, 3:46 PM

Was the 2006 ACC Coastal, who went 19-27. This might have something to do with what I posted above, about the winningest ACC division, the 2006 Atlantic.

I was also just a little surprised at the SEC East/West...
Nov 12, 2014, 3:53 PM
|
|
Some one here have mentioned that the SEC East used to be the dominant division in the conference, but the West has had a better non-division record most year, going all the way back to 1992.
The SEC East was at its strongest from about 2006-2008, when Florida was dominating, Georgia was very good, Tennessee was still good, and South Carolina was above average.

Heck. a lot of fans would consider a record of 8 - 4 to be merely a mediocre season.

Until these SEC teams play ranked out of conference opponents away from home, I'll never give them credibility. They play no one but each other. Let me know when LsU goes to TCU or Miss st goes to Eugene Oregon. Bama did play West Virginia but West Virginia isn't exactly world beaters and it was at home. if you think I'm lying look at Miss st OOC.... Absolutely horrible!!!!

and that's being nice
MSU is one of 2 unbeaten teams left in the country, with only 3 weeks left, and you wanna say stupid stuff like, "i'll give them no respect until they play someone OOC"
Disagree with their scheduling? Fine.
Buy the conspiracy bias? Fine.
But at least post things that are somewhat logical.

Ok Mr Spock, ill tries to be more Logical Massa. Like I said, espn makes this conference look like a baby NFL! For example A 2 loss Auburn (with a ranked and unranked loss Logically has an outside chance to get in the playoffs, although it's very unlikely it can still happen. A clemson team plays number 1 in overtime and loses to a ranked georgia and basically falls from the face of the earth. Miss state was 7-6 last year so why would they start out ranked in the top 25 anyway? With they're OOC schedule they're pretty much handed a spot in the top 5

Well I retract saying them being handed the top 5 spot was highly illogical of me... What I ment to say with a 7-6 season last year they never should have started as high as they did anyway. If Clemson went 7-6 last year and had Miss states OOC this year they wouldnt even see top 10 let alone the top 5.

Yes, they are undefeated I get it! Gees what I'm saying is when you have the OOC scedule most of these Sec teams have ......They are almost insured on going undefeated! Atleast FSU, Oregon, Clemson, even Notre dame had the sack to agree to decent OOC competition. Yes, Miss State is undefeated thats great, and of they win out they will go to playoffs. What I'm trying to show you Logic or not is that if you can get into the playoffs with a Weak OOC shedule then He'll everyone should do it.

not really that worried about it, Clemson should have taken care of business thats the only upsetting part about it. It would paint a better playoff picture earlier in the year if everyone plays atleast 1 or 2 strong out of conference opponents. 1 on the road and 1 at home.

I commend you on your well thought out research on this subject. In my short time of being present here on TNet I see the SEC really is a huge focus for many on these boards. I, however, rank in the obviously small minority of the Clemson Tigers fans of the ACC here on these boards who does not care about the SEC in the slightest unless we are playing a team from that conference! Just saying folks.
