All you need to do is tap a toe in bounds with possession of the ball for it to be a catch. He was being pushed out of bounds. As long as you get a toe down in bounds before going out of bounds that’s a catch.

Unfortunately the rule is if your heel comes down out of bounds the catch is considerate out of bounds. I think it’s a stupid rule; especially because if you make a diving catch, all you have to do is drag your toes to keep the catch in bounds. Somehow falling backwards or coming down straight changes that. It makes no sense but it is indeed the rule.

I only learned this after I googled the rule after this happen to us earlier this year.
