California just decided NO college sports this Fall!

May 12, 2020, 6:03 PM

So, guess we can count them out for a FB Natty for sure.

One thing for sure, SEC Commissioner is doing all he can for his schools to play FB.

They have no shot at a natty whether they play or not.....think it has been forever since any of those schools have sniffed the grand prize in football.....Go Tigers!!!!

They can’t people off the beaches. How do they expect to keep them away from school. They couldn’t close an umbrella.

By not having classes on campus and by not having games. Pretty simple.

I know it is just football....

May 12, 2020, 6:21 PM

But football is what lifts my spirits. Following the recruiting, the TNet discussions and articles, the practices, and the coach and player interviews. I look forward to each game. I plan my Saturdays around which football games I want to watch from as soon as Game Day ends until I fall asleep.

A fall without football would just be depressing. I hope it does not have to come to that.

Pretty sure many of us feel the same way.***

California State University system announced that all 23 schools in their system are barring students from on campus this fall. Thee Mountain West schools are impacted: San Jose State, San Diego State, and Fresno State.

The article doesn't mentioned anything else about the state or PAC-12.

It does imply that the news is not good for college football in the state of California.

Thanks for posting the link. This does not affect the...

...Pac12 except for OOC scheduling of some of these Mountain West schools. I'm sure several of them have San Jose St or Fresno St or San Diego St scheduled at home so that's going to impact them. There are also other P5 programs that have scheduled these schools for home contests...for example TA&M is set to host Fresno St on 10/10 and Penn St is scheduled to host San Jose St on 9/19. They are going to be scrambling to find a replacement I guess. What a mess.

I doubt you want that, California takes in 78 cents from the federal government for every dollar it gives back in revenue. It has a larger economy than most countries.

Re: California should just join the EU

May 12, 2020, 7:57 PM

You left out the 80 cents they are borrowing for every dollar they spend. They will eventually need a massive bailout from the federal government and (you guessed it) me and you.

They already have more debt in their state retirement plan than the budgets of a majority of the countries of the world. Not pretty...

California had a 21 billion dollar surplus last year. Is being an idiot painful, or is it actually just kind of pleasant numbness?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's a budget surplus, which sounds so warm and cozy

May 13, 2020, 9:44 AM

until you factor in the $1 trillion in unfunded pension liabilities. So even if the budget surplus comes to fruition, the actual debt for CA is ~$980 billion. The current Governor keeps proposing billions of dollars in additional taxes, which is pricing even wealthy people out of the state. With the mass exodus of both people and companies leaving CA their budget surplus will dwindle and their debt will continue to increase.

My older brother is retired CHP.
Seems every 6 months he gets a letter from CALPERS that his pension may be cut or eliminated entirely.
Everything was fine until the state finally managed to get their meat-hooks into that fund.
In very short order it was folded into the general fund.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's incredible, in a very awful way. It's pretty amazing

May 13, 2020, 10:16 AM

how many people are leaving CA to move to states like SC, TX and AZ because of how brutal the state is on businesses. Yet these people continue to vote the same way after leaving.

May 12, 2020, 8:03 PM [ in reply to Re: California should just join the EU ]

If you count only the direct payments to state coffers. When you count ALL the cash flowing to California, they're pulling out of the system. 2017 is the most recent data I could dig up, but $334.3B in spending (taking out retirement benefits, which are in a different taxable account, but still negative for the state), and $234.5B in revenue.

Statistics can say whatever the presenter wants them to say. It's just how you select the limits for the data.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are missing a few big pieces

May 13, 2020, 12:48 AM

The tax number you have is only federal income tax. The federal spending is sourced from income tax, FICA, and highway taxes. This year, a majority of taxpayers will pay no federal income tax.

The article says CSU system...which is mostly non power 5...

the power 5 schools are in UC system.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are correct. It is the CSU system....not CU.

May 12, 2020, 9:32 PM

It affects schools such as Fresno St, San Diego St, San Jose St, etc. 23 schools total in the CSU system, none in PAC-12. But it does create a mess for those P5 schools that have scheduled many of these CSU system schools as OOC home opponents. TA&M, Penn St, etc.

Whatever political persuasion you are, keep in mind one thing: It is very likely California is just the first state to announce no students on campus. Others will follow; we just don't know how many.

Obviously states in the south will resist this decision more than others. I think May 12 is too early to announce this and they should have waited until June.
