Only two possible explanations:

1. Holding back a football player is nothing new in SC. Gives a kid time to get bigger and stronger and/or avoid wasting a season behind and older and/or better player at the same position.

2. He may be as dumb as he appears. Not a slam, and I’m sure he’s a good person, but let’s be honest - he ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed.

I think he said Bentley was held back in the sixth grade. That does not mean he flunked the grade. It is a common practice for parents to hold back a child so he can improve his competitiveness by playing against players who will be a year younger than him. This gives a player a boost in recruiting because he will be judged against players younger than him. This practice is really big in Texas.
Or he could have been held back for intellectually developmental reasons.
