Romney had a great point over the weekend.

Nov 9, 2020, 7:18 AM

The people voted for Conservativism and against a person. While they had had enough of Trump, they embraced Conservative values and elected more GOPers down ticket.

The more nuanced version is that it was Trump himself who brought in non-White, blue collar voters and their enthusiasm for him is part of what allowed the GOPers down ticket to win more than expected. Even saw a dude on CNN say that.

Regardless, if the GOP can continue to appeal to non-Whites AND embrace traditional values, it, not the Queer Democrat Socialists, will become the dominant national party.

If I were advising Biden, I would tell him to remain very moderate over these next two years or the Dems will get wiped out in the '22 mid-terms. If he goes all Woke, he will cost his Party dearly.

If I were advising GOP candidates, I'd say just be Trump without the assholiness of Trump. It's a winning formula.

anti-trumpers have been saying for awhile.

The policies wasn't the problem with Trump. Trump was the problem with Trump.

If he would have got out of his own way and stayed off of Twitter he would still be president.

Nov 9, 2020, 8:23 AM

just not his rhetoric?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Policy wise I think it was smart to shut down

Nov 9, 2020, 8:28 AM

Undercutting his staff and sparking mask conspiracy theories did not help.

Trump's problem was what and how he said stuff.

If he would have gotten up there, did a "we will get through this together" speech then let Fauci and Burk (sp?) lay out everything he would still be president.

But that's not Trump. That's not how he does things. And that's one reason why he lost.

In retrospect, shutting down was dumb.

Nov 9, 2020, 10:57 AM

We have more people now with Covid and hospitalized than we did back in March. Are we goig to shut down now?

The shut down nonsense was fear of the unknown.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Using your retrospect we had a virus we knew nothing about

Nov 9, 2020, 5:34 PM

didn't know how deadly it was, how it worked, how it spread, what preventative steps could be taken, nothing.

So shutting down then was warranted then. Now that we know MUCH more about it, I don't see lockdowns happening.

Shutdowns were for fear of the unknown.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Trump didn't shut anything down (of consequence)...

Nov 9, 2020, 11:14 AM [ in reply to Policy wise I think it was smart to shut down ]

that was all handled at the state/local level...while Trump was blasting just about anyone that did it.

From a policy/action failure perspective, his biggest failings were on leading PPE and test availability and having a coordinated effort between federal and state gov.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Trump's biggest problem in mitigating and navigating Covid

Nov 9, 2020, 11:22 AM

was that it was a challenge that you couldn't lie or sue your way through, as has been and continues to be his MO in his business and political career.

or you run the risk of losing out entirely on the policy you want. For example, Tommy Tuberville is an idiot, but conservatives had to vote for him due to the risk of losing the Senate.

But I agree with you. If Trump would have controlled his rhetoric, he'd have won in a landslide.

Nikki is Teflon enough to be a serious challenger, but she has no substance.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Moderates decided this election.

Nov 9, 2020, 8:09 AM

They sent a clear message about Trump extremism. We weren't having it anymore.

And yep, if Biden and the Dems go way left in the next two years, moderates will send them a message, too.

No, they won't be "Trump without the assholiness of Trump". Because Trump's policies often encompassed that persona. The cruelty was the point.

Trumpism is a failure. The GOP would be wise to reject every and all aspect of it.

Men were split about down the middle while women leaned Biden.

Moderates, so far, look to have made up 40 percent of the voters based on exit polling.

I think there are a number of left ideas that are popular with a majority of Americans - expanded Medicaid, decriminalized marijuana, clean air & water, a living wage. I think Joe can promote these without going too far.

I also think there are a number of Republican (not just Trump) ideas that are too far right for the majority of Americans.

Both of these statements are predicated on the idea that we actually discuss the ideas rationally rather than allowing our fear and anger buttons to be pressed by misleading and sensationalistic demagogues.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I disagree.....the country has moved too far left...

Nov 9, 2020, 8:48 AM

It's depressing for me to know that the likelihood of there being another Republican President in my lifetime is slim to none.

Nov 9, 2020, 10:56 AM [ in reply to I disagree.....the country has moved too far left... ]

There are several strong republican candidates for 2024, and the 2020 election hasn't even (officially) been determined yet.

Electing Biden/Harris was probably the best thing that could happen to get a get a real conservative in office.
