I can understand why Swag was upset on Saturday

Apr 14, 2014, 10:26 PM

If you're trying to get a look at the players on the field, why would a coaching staff decide to punt the ball on 4th and three instead of going for it. Did they want to see how the punter looked? Shouldn't they have wanted to see how the offense would do in this situation, including Kelly? I can kinda understand why a guy trying to prove himself would be upset at his coaches. This was an intra-squad scrimmage afterall...it wasn't a bowl game.

No, I'm not Chad, but that situation on Saturday would have been the perfect place to watch and grade him as the future QB, instead, we got nothing. Now he's gone and the team is down to one QB.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you really think his reaction

Apr 14, 2014, 10:35 PM

to punting on fourth down Saturday is the only reason he is gone? Come on man.

Re: Do you really think his reaction

Apr 14, 2014, 10:38 PM

I didn't say that was the only reason he's gone. I'm just saying the Spring game would have been the perfect place to see what he could have done in that 4th and short situation and the coaches pulled the plug on him. Why play the game if you're going to coach like that?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here's a thought: You are more concerned about mentality

Apr 14, 2014, 10:54 PM

than with skills and ability. So, which do you test? Which did he fail?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Here's a thought: You are more concerned about mentality

Apr 14, 2014, 11:00 PM

I'd like to believe the coaching staff was smart enough to test Kelly's mentality in this situation, but frankly I don't think they're that smart.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh, I see. You're the smart one.

Apr 14, 2014, 11:04 PM

They aren't so smart. I get your intent here now. And, I'll know to how to read your future posts. Thanks for clarifying.

Re: Oh, I see. You're the smart one.

Apr 14, 2014, 11:08 PM

So you really think the coaches did that to Kelly to test his reaction? I think they knew what his reaction would be. They actually should have known what he was like before they recruited him. He was kicked off his high school football team in Pennsylvania, twice I think, for similar hot-headed behavior.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And how many 4th and shorts didn't end with a kick that day?

Apr 14, 2014, 11:16 PM

Maybe none?

My point is Kelly made his dissatisfaction known before coming off the field. Coaches stood their ground as a test.

And he failed. Don't know why I am giving you such a detailed answer. It's not clear you are serious. But, anyway......

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If it was a test, I think it's safe to assume Chad

Apr 20, 2014, 5:44 PM [ in reply to Re: Oh, I see. You're the smart one. ]

failed. Either way, the players are there to learn and listen to the coaches. Not the other way around.

No one knows what CM was thinking but its possible he wanted to put Stout into a 2 minute situation. The point is its the coaches call and its the player responsibility to run the play the coach calls.

Chad's physical gifts were never in question

Apr 14, 2014, 10:38 PM

Chad's leadership and/or hot headedness have been questioned. I think the coaches were testing him with a little more adversity. In my eyes Cole had the easier task considering his offensive weapons and the defense he was facing.

Re: Chad's physical gifts were never in question

Apr 15, 2014, 12:14 AM

I think in the situation going into the spring game you give the QB in second place, Chad Kelly, the more difficult situations to face during the game. He either shines and becomes the leader in the race or you have solid evidence to say Chad these are the things you are doing that are preventing you from starting. Unfortunately for Chad he crashed himself out of the race.

The coaches have always preached

Apr 14, 2014, 10:40 PM

That they want to end every possession with a kick and it is ok to punt. The decision on Saturday was no different than it likely would have been in the season. Regardless though, that is a decision left to the coaches. It is pretty clear they didn't ask for his opinion in the matter and he didn't know when to let go.

Re: The coaches have always preached

Apr 15, 2014, 12:27 AM [ in reply to The coaches have always preached ]

There is nothing wrong with the QB wanting to go for it, any player worth his salt should think he can get the first down and want to try. However, once the coaches say no then that's it you drop it and say ok coach, and you pump up your teammates to go harder when you get back out there not pout and throw a fit like a kid who got his candy taken. Not to mention it was a spring game where you want to get the players reps but one of your main concerns as a coach is to get your players through the game without injury, Kelly should no this as much as anyone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. They should've run the wimins bball coach route.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If he were just upset it would be one thing

Apr 14, 2014, 11:24 PM

but with multiple reports he not only argued with coaches to begin with it continued even after he was benched. There isn't any coach out there worth his whistle that would tolerate that, especially after the reported incident after The Citadel game where they had a "Come to Jesus" meeting after he blew up because he didn't get in that game.

I would imagine that the Thursday and Saturday incidents were just the icing on the cake, and that he had been put on warning long before either happened. Dabo has shown in the past that while he will discipline players, he is also more than willing to give them every opportunity to get back in the good graces of the staff. I would imagine Chad failed in his opportunity to change his behavior and left Dabo no choice other than to cut him loose.
