Let's brighten the mood and talk rivalry

Jul 14, 2020, 10:47 AM

It's been a pretty slow morning, so I pulled some stats together on our rivalr...err domination with the Coots. After 117 games, we are 71-42-4 (0.6239), with an average score of 20.55-14.12.

Over the last 25 years, our record is 17-8 (0.6800) with an average score of 29.88-20.96
Over the last 50 years, our record is 33-16-1 (0.6700) with an average score of 26.82-19.86
Over the last 75 years, our record is 43-29-3 (0.5933) with an average score of 22.31-17.61
Over the last 100 years, our record is 58-39-3 (0.5950) with an average score of 20.32-15.75

These trends don't look good for our feathered friends. Winning % and margin of victory moving against them!

Now for a little trivia:
Which decade was the winningest for the Tigers?
Which was the winningest for the Coots? How many decades did they have a better than 50% win pct?
Which decade was the highest scoring for the Tigers? Lowest?
Which decade was the highest scoring for the Coots? Lowest?
In which decade did we have the highest average point differential over them?
Out of 13 decades, how many did they outscore us in?
In what year were the most total points scored? Least?

I am going to make an “educated” guess

Jul 14, 2020, 11:06 AM

That the decade of the 1950’s was the most successful single decade for SCar against us in football. Am I right?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, it's a tie...we were 4-5-1 in the 40s and the 50s

Jul 14, 2020, 11:11 AM

and 5-5 in the 60s. Rough stretch. But we outscored them in the 50s and 60s. They outscored us in the 40s. The 40s and 50s were the only two decades we had a losing record against them.

And I don’t believe they have ever won more than 5 games in any decade. So no better than 50% records for the chicks.

They have won 5 in a decade 4 times

Jul 14, 2020, 11:26 AM

but they actually had winning records in the 40s and 50s due to ties. They won 5 also in the 20s and 60s, but the records were even at 5-5 in those two decades.

So you have answered a few of my questions. They have had a winning record in just 2 of 13 decades, and those were both 55% (5-4-1). They have also outscored us only twice, in the 20s and in the 40s. We outscored them in the 50s and 60s, despite going 9-10-1 in those 20 years.

Yes, I get that reasoning accounting for ties as a half win and half loss. Very good research. :)

Actually, it sounds like their time in the ACC (50s/60s) was the "high water mark" - if you consider 5-4-1 "high" for the program. Only era to have a trophy and only time to be successful (their standards, not ours). Still we won 6X the hardware during those days.

Well this turned into a 2 person conversation

Jul 14, 2020, 11:59 AM

Here are the other answers:
Winningest decade - 1910s, 8-1-1 (.8500), highest point differential at 17.80 (22.50-4.70)
Highest scoring - Clemson 2010s (31 PPG), Coots 1970s (23.20 PPG - we outscored them and went 6-4)
Lowest scoring - Clemson 1920s (8.3 PPG), Coots 1900s (4 PPG)
Most points in a single game - 91 points, 2018
Least points in a single game - 0 points, 1915 and 1945

You are predicting 8-1-1 in the 2020s?

Jul 14, 2020, 12:13 PM

:)

Nice catch...fixed now

Jul 14, 2020, 12:29 PM

And I couldn't predict 8-1-1 for the 2020s; ties not allowed! So I will go with either 8-1 or 9-1, depending on whether or not there is a 2020 game. Figuring the sole loss for somewhere around 2025.

Actually, it could (should never be) 8-1-1. 8 wins for us, one for the refs, and one for Covid in 2020

good information and enjoyed reading the stats. Let's keep whipping their tail feathers.

Can't imagine trying to be a recruiter on their staff. What do you sell? Being in a conference which has all the media bias? Maybe, but so could Vanderbilt.

They’ll sell four years of losing to some of the best teams in college football.........well that and some cheap hotel rooms in downtown Columbia.

Actually recruiting for them is easy. Offer anyone anything that was offered anything by another school.... especially after the Cit fills their roster. Lie, lie lie, lie, lie.

If another recruit is impressed with a program like UNC, Duke, Tulane, Maryland, Houston, Connecticut or Davidson, tell the recruit "Yeah well, if UNC was such a power program, how come we nearly beat them half of the time" - if then nod, you got a player.

Show off trophies of OTHER teams in your football facility. I mean, why not remind them of other teams that they will not get recruited.
