So a Clemson booster can buy 700 plus jerseys for each player and give them away as a game day promo. If the player received 10 bucks for each jersey with their name on it, they would make 7000.00 a game. Do a different uniform for each home game and that's 56,000 bucks per player per year. Plus autograph sessions, pictures, and appearance fees. Unintended consequences. Pandora's box has been opened.

The only equitable way is to distribute among all athletes with a slightly greater percentage going to the highest replicated images. AND, it goes into some fund that can be drawn upon at some later date. Maybe a 401 fund. Of course the cost to administer any form of compensation may well be more than the revenue they are administering. Could be a bureaucratic nightmare with corruption a concern. Kinda like a governmental organization. Yeah, just like the NCAA.

One player made the comment about not having enough money to take his girlfriend out. When I was in college I did have to much spendable cash either. And I stayEd busy working to put myself through school. IMO it just comes down to greed! It will be college football and country’s downfall. It’s a huge mistake if state legislators get more involved in college football! Dang they can’t even run the state!

If players are going to receive additional compensation in addition to a free education, access to resources the average student does not have, clothing, shoes, trips, more than many of these players would not have access to if the fan stop coming.

And is Dabo back tracking on his statement that if players receive payment he will find something else to do??

Payment is just Another reason for players to affect outcomes of games? Boston College 1972 I believe.

Key ideas to me were the prohibitions on inducements to attend, and anything related to performance.

Having said those are great ideals, how in the world do they plan on policing that?

If every player drives a hot car, how do they even have cause to investigate the ones whose likeness isn't as valuable?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re why, oh why are you ruining college football?

Oct 29, 2019, 8:58 PM

You may not believe this. Not because it's so hard to believe, but it's so hard to fathom.

Recently a financial planner from Sacramento vacationed in my town, and visited in my church. (I've talked casually with before because he's here to spend time with grandkids.) I was asking him the reasoning behind this bill that is going to wreck college football; we have seen the governor posturing that CA is a friend of the oppressed, undercompensated student-athlete, but no one believes liberals actually care about them. It's got to be about money somehow, so which angle is it that's driving this bill?

His response: he doesn't know. Nobody in CA knows about or cares about this bill, because nobody in CA even pays attention to college sports anymore. But being a Californian, he guessed that the state legislature had one, maybe two primary goals: since the state is always looking for new sources of revenue, if you pay the "undercompensated" student-athlete, then you can tax them. Win-win.

Additionally, CA is still more lucrative then anyplace else in the nation. The state's GDP is about 20% of the national GDP. So all those home grown CA athletes that go to Oregon, Utah, Nebraska, Clemson and everywhere else can be paid more when they attend their own state schools instead of leaving. They're plugging the talent drain.

So what can't you believe, you ask? The fact that the CA state legislature is wrecking a wonderful sport nobody in CA cares about, because they can't balance their checkbook; and in making sure the "undercompensated" athletes can make plenty of money, they are denying the students a level educational playing field.

To be sure, we can't just blame CA. FL was going to do the same thing, and FL colleges are generally more inferior academically than CA schools.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lots of people in California care about college football

Oct 29, 2019, 10:52 PM

I realize that California isn’t known for college football like some of the southeastern states are, but there are lots of fans of USC, UCLA, and Stanford. Those schools all historically have good fan support, even when they aren’t national championship contenders.

And let’s not ignore college basketball, which is huge there, especially at UCLA. They are the most successful college basketball program of all time and have an incredible following. They are still one of the top college coaching hoops jobs for that reason.

So to act like California voted for this because “nobody there cares about college sports” is ridiculous.

Re: Lots of people in California care about college football

Oct 30, 2019, 12:03 PM

JK, I didn't say the words. The Sacramento-based successful financial planner, who has lived in the state his entire life, said the words.

obviously the distinction is in the definition of the word "nobody."

But just check some stats: the average FBS home game in CA draws fewer than 35K fans.
Except for the 2 big rivalry games, NO FBS football game will host more than 75K.
In SC, USC and Clemson will exceed that number at least 12x.
The Rose Bowl doesn't count; in spite of its 100K attendance, all paying fans come in support of the two teams. All locals in attendance get free tickets as rewards for their volunteer labor in making the Rose Bowl parade the huge event that it is.
The Rose Bowl is half empty for every UCLA home game.
CA has 40 million people
2 million college students
Fewer than 1 million different individuals will comprise the entire attendance at ALL college athletic events hosted in CA this school year.
That is about the same number--about .95 million-- of South Carolinians--who will attend college sporting events in SC with a total population of only 5 million.
FCS schools with an enrollment of 25K usually draw no more than 1500 fans
The fans who do attend don't spend the day tailgating; they come and stay awhile, and leave early.

Californians are the ultimate bandwagon fans, because life is too busy to follow a losing team.

When I discussed the best high school teams in CA, this man stared at me blankly. Only a few people care, and most of them live back east. We Clemson fans know more about Mater Dei and StJohn's Bosco than almost anybody in CA.

I can go on. My in laws have lived there for 40 years and don't pay any attention to college sports unless someone is having a great year. There is simply too much going on, and every household primarily cares more about professional or the youth sports their kids are playing. That's all they have time for.

When I lived there I was appalled how ignorant my East Coast friends were of events that happened in CA while I was there. Until I moved back South and realized how hard it was to follow sports out there. It's two different worlds. If I stayed up really late, I could talk to sports with my FiL .

BiL lives in Barstow but he's from Anaheim. Huge Dodgers and Rams fan. Never spends a dime on them. Hasn't been to a game in years. Last time I went to a baseball game in Oakland, the stadium was about 2/3 full--from the third to sixth innings. You'd think fans would either come late or leave early:nope. They did both.

Of course, ATL has become the same way.

My point is that college sports in particular, and high school to a degree, get squeezed out for Californians' attention, and especially for their attendance. They don't have enough time or concern enough to care about all of it.

So, yes, I am totally saying that if they wreck our sports, they don't care.

CA has 7 schools that play FBS football. I bet the governor of CA can't name them all.

Oct 29, 2019, 9:15 PM

I do not think you can fairly treat a kid with a sport scholarship the same as a kid that they are, or their parents are paying for their education...If a student athlete at most schools get a career ending injury, there goes his/her scholarship, and most of them don't have parents that could afford a college education for their kids and keep up with the expenses that it cost to just keep a roof over their heads!!!! I believe that if their likeness can make them money, the NCAA should get out of their way!!! And stop trying to be the only ones making money off the kids from the money being paid by the schools in fees to the NCAA for their so called rules, and being the rules enforcers!!!

This is not good and we are about to lose the game we all love. This will create a super unfair playing field with the schools with tons of alumni with money figuring out ways to pay players for their “likeness”.

I also agree with the jealousy factor as well and transfers will increase in an effort to make money.

Oct 30, 2019, 12:51 AM

In five years (or less) we will look back on this moment as the day college athletics died. At least we got a couple national championships in before the inevitable end. If student athletes think they have been getting taken advantage of now, just wait until the agents, accountants, financial advisers, shady business owners, drug dealers, and the syndicate get done with them. Graduation rates will decrease significantly as well. This is a going to end very badly for college athletics and most of the athletes.

We're out!

Oct 30, 2019, 7:29 AM

My family has discussed it, and feel that if we wanted to watch pro sports, we'd watch pro sports. We don't.

If a handful of greedy players want to get paid beyond the scholarships and all the other incentives offered currently, they should go play semi-pro ball or something else. There's no law that says they cannot play football somewhere else before the NFL will let them in.

You'll have killed the golden goose that gave 80 or so kids on the team who never had a chance to sniff the NFL a scholarship and a grand life experience that few will ever have.

There's simply no way to allow players to be paid for their likeness and at the same time "compensation for athletics performance or participation is impermissible". No one will be paying sophomore PRTM majors for their likeness, nor will they be paying 2nd string long-snappers for their likeness. The only reason a football player's likeness is worth anything is because of their athletics performance and participation.

I have a lot less heartburn about players getting paid by EA Sports to show up in a video game than I do about having some well-heeled booster paying players for their likenesses. The former is unlikely to skew recruiting (a big-name player will be paid by EA Sports wherever they land). The later will completely ruin collegiate sports.

If this passes, my family will no longer make the significant contributions in money (IPTAY donations and season tickets), nor time. College sports will just be another pro sport we might flip on when nothing else is on TV.

*Protect the recruiting environment and prohibit inducements to select, remain at, or transfer to a specific institution.

There is no way they can separate Recruiting and Endorsements. Smart colleges will create a Director of Recruiting Incentives to coordinate meetings between recruits and boosters interested in licensing that recruits image. They will create a package showing all of the endorsements they'll be guaranteed for 3 years to attend that school. Recruits can shop around and select the school that has the best guaranteed deal and IMMEDIATELY become millionaires.

Ideally, recruits can get agents to represent them. Agents will need access to high schools and maybe middle schools to sign their new clients. And, with that signing, we'll have 14-15 year old kids getting fronted $100,000 by their agents.

And players in college can individually negotiate with EA Sports on how much they'll be paid individually for the use of their likeness in EA Sports College Football.

But, maybe the players will form a College Football Players Association so they can now collectively bargain? They can limit how much Freshmen get paid, similar to how the NFLPA put a cap on rookie deals. Maybe they'll have a strike when their demands aren't met?

This is going to be such a $hitshow. I'm excited to watch the chaos.

It only took them 150 years to ruin it. It's over.

Why couldn't the NFL just start a minor league?

Clemson would fare much better under a structure like college baseball. This is seriously concerning...

Nothing scares a boomer more than change. Mention one hint at something changing from the status quo and all of a sudden the entire world as we know it is ending.

respectfully disagree. It's because we've seen it before. We've seen the increasing reach of government (in this case CA legislator) screw up more than they fix. Just ask a teacher how more gov interference in their classroom is working out.

Changing the status quo, just for the sake of change isn't always an improvement.

This will be bad for Clemson...

...our fanbase is dedicated, but SMALL. When the money takes over recruiting, which it will, Clemson donors will not be able to compete with the likes of Michigan, OSU, and Texas in terms of total $$$.

This is going to be an absolute train wreck that ruins college football and basketball. Recruiting will cease to be about the program, academics and culture. It will be all about money and who can manipulate the system to come up with the most of it for a recruit. "If you come to our school, we know a car dealer that will pay you $100K to do a TV commercial..." I hope I'm wrong but I feel like this is a very sad day for college athletics.

A POSITIVE take on this can of worms ...

This likely will be a bad thing for college sports at most universities, but as long as Dabo and his staff are heading up our football program with the administration's and board's support, Clemson might just benefit from it.

How is that? The character of the student-athletes that Clemson recruits are not necessarily all-consumed with money. I've heard so many of our players say that the family feeling, programs at Clemson - PAW Journey, Internships, the Fan Base, the lifestyle, education, faith ... ALL TOGETHER .. is what brought them to Tigertown.

The character of those types of players "generally" contradicts greed. Sure, we may lose a few "blue chippers", but I support kids making their own choices, and plenty more great ones will choose Clemson for the quality of their 4 years here in growing as a person.

Do you think Watson, Lawrence, Spiller, Boyd, Watkins, Renfrow, Cle, Dexter, Wilkins, Tee, Amari ... (just to name a few of the MANY great players in the last 10 years) would have changed their minds to go to Clemson for a few extra $$$? I don't think so ...

As the whole infrastructure begins to crumble quickly and the warts begin to show after 2021, many of the best players will opt-out of the "quick buck", and turn their attention to Clemson and what OUR University offers to their students. Growing and becoming a better person > $$$ , and even some 18-year olds can see that.

Just my two-cents worth. <img border=">

GO TIGERS!!
