I've done this for several years and when there are numerous common opponents, the idea of averaging and comparing stats seems to be a decent predictor of outcome.

The total yards stat tells the overall story - we move the ball better and prevent the opposition from moving the ball better. Our offensive and defensive yd/pass is similar, but we are quite a bit better on yd/rush for and against.

Penalties, pass attempts/completions, 3rd down efficiencies are totals, not averages.

Our OL needs to step up now we're in the championship rounds now.

Yeah because being first in sacks allowed with only 2 sacks in the past 6 games since Cervenka moved to RG and being 2nd nationally in rush yards per carry has been very disappointing. There's no excuse to not be first in both categories.

I agree that looking at these stats is cool and a possible

indicator, but you have to be a little careful. Syracuse and Pitt are the "better" of the four commons opponents.

Syracuse - we lost our starting QB in this game and KB had just left. Dungy got knocked out against ND. So that really makes that tough to measure.

Pitt - Our offense was definitely hampered with the rain last night, and while we still handled our business, it could have been even worse.

My bottom line ---- ND is in for a rude awakening. They have not seen anything like Clemson all year. I think this will be like Ohio St - Michigan game.....ND won't be able to handle our speed. And now we get to play on turf in a dome?!?! GO TIGERS!

Yeah, there are tons of caveats that could be cited all over the place. Home/away, playing conditions, injuries, etc. But, once you get enough data points the errors (or caveats) will sort of cancel out. Is four enough? Not sure...
