My connection to GT

Oct 12, 2020, 9:14 PM

Dwight Keith is my grandfather on mother's side coached at GT back in the Bobby Dodd days. He was their OC. He also was head coach of basketball, track and maybe baseball. Coaches wore a lot of hats back then. Here he is with Bobby Dood and Ray Ellis, another assistant GT football coach and Ray Graves who later was head coach at U of Florida.

My father played football at GT and that is how he met my mother.

I was the first in my family to attend Clemson and proud of it. But as a young child in the mid 60's we would go from Sumter to visit my grand parents in Atlanta. He had an office down in their basement where he had signed photos of every big college football of that time....you name it, Bud Wilkerson, Bear Bryant, Ara Parseghian, etc. He also started Coach and Athlete magazine, the first magazine in the country specifically for sports (yes before SI).

Sorry any brag on my family, but if I don't who will? LOL.

Go Tigers!!

I'd love to know who down voted this.

I wondered about that myself. I'm not a tech fan myself, but if some of my family members had achievements like that, dang skippy I'd brag.

I don't blame you for bragging. That's some pretty cool stuff. My old man was pretty widely known too. I think his picture was in every post office in the US. But I don't like to brag about it.

Thanks for sharing, cool stories to pass along to the next generation in your family. Sadly it seems many people today don't really care about their roots. A lot of oral history is being lost.

Which one in the picture was your grandad and which one was Bobby Dodd? Also I guess your father's people were the Harvin meat packing plant people from Sumter.....

My grandfather is on far left.
Bobby Dodd in the center.
Right is Ray Ellis. Ellis was brought in to teach Dodd how to run the T formation.
Bobby Dodd fired my grandfather around mid 50’s. He said it was the hardest thing he ever did, to fire his best friend.
But my grandfather started a few sports magazines and recovered quite well.

Harvin meat packing is my 2nd cousin.
My father was a Texaco jobber, in Sumter, he had a bulk fuel plant and sold gas to Texaco gas stations.

Thanks for asking.

Bobby Dodd was good friends . . .

with my dad’s sister (Aunt Sally). They played mixed doubles in Atlanta.

Small world with two Sumter boys having a Dodd connection!!!

Yep. Dodd was an avid tennis player even in his later days.

You definitely have a right to brag! I hope you inherited some of the fab sports memorabilia your granddad must have had!
