How to deflate footballs without letting the air out......

Jan 23, 2015, 3:36 PM

It would seem to me they could just inflate them to the minimum pressure before game time with extremely hot air. Then as as the game progresses and the temperature lowers the pressure on the ball would then also lower as the air in the ball cools. This would allow the Cheatriots to pull this off without physically letting any air out of the ball. This would also explain how 11 out of 12 balls had exactly 2 psi less. I wonder what the deal with the 12 ball was. They left one out? They had that one ball as a decoy perhaps?

The 12th ball is the one the punter used.

Maybe Bill Belichick kept the 12th ball warm under his

This would happen naturally any time that balls are inflated in a warm locker room and then used in a cold outside stadium. Those that doubt this only need to look at the air pressure indicator in their newer cars. On very cold mornings, you will get a low tire pressure warning that will go away as the tire warms. All of this happens without anyone adding or removing air from the tire. On the other hand, a ball inflated in the air conditioned locker room during a September game at Clemson and then used on the 100 degree plus field would gain pressure. How much is the ball pressure change per degree change in ambient air temperature? I will leave that to the Engineering grads and students. That would make for an interesting experiment. Any chance that the Patriots are innocent and just a victim of a cold stadium? I doubt it, but I sure would see if it would float if I were them.

Minor difference

Jan 23, 2015, 4:33 PM

The temperature on the field was low 50s at game start and upper 40s at game end. The density of air would be about 5.3% less than at 70 degrees. So that change would drop a 12.5 psi ball about .7 psi...so not as much as they say.

Make it idjit proof and someone will make a better idjit.

all it takes is 5 minutes training with a ball boy

a) give a goober like this $50:

b) give him one of these:

c) figure out how long you need to put the needle in to drain out 2 lbs "one Mississippi, two Missisiippi..." You KNOW they know the exact amount of time.

d) Do that inconspicuously to every ball he gets his little goober hands on during the game (easy - NOBODY watches the BALL BOY).

DONE.

Interesting to read the NFL report today that the balls were under inflated in the first half, then corrected at halftime. With fully inflated balls, the Patriots out scored the Colts 28-0 in the second half.

To me, that says a lot about how relevant the rule is. Still

Looks like the NFL hired a firm with forensic expertise to investigate. I am sure they will get to the bottom of it and issue the proper punishment. I'm going to wait for the results before asking someone to banned. Either way, the Patriots were the better team and manhandled the Colts the last three meetings. It will be a great matchup with the Seahawks. Plenty of hype going into this one. Enjoy your weekend and Go Tigers!
