How do you lose 5 in a row with likes of CJ, Sammy, Nuk,

Sep 15, 2014, 6:09 PM

Ellington, Boyd? Because it's not about skill players, it's about being dominant in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Game is still blocking and tackling and always will be. We should have learned this facing chickens run-n-shoot in the 80s.

I love the high-powered offense but until you put high-powered offensive line priority first, it will not consistently hold up against upper echelon. Can you imagine what the skill players mentioned above would have done behind a Danny Ford offensive line? Fix it!!

that's easy

Help is on the way. We have an absolute stellar O line class for this year.

Gets more from his talent - which is very, very good.

Game day coaching better than Saben.

Really - who is better?

He tied Vince's record.

he did it without Shaw or Lattimore.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I cannot imagine the triple option with those players either

Sep 15, 2014, 6:33 PM

but I also try to be as objective as possible. Keep in mind I'm still not convinced Ford is not God. I know Danny went to Arkansas and could not reproduce this fix you speak of.

That era vs this era is comparing apples to oranges as well.

No one has mentioned the caliber of these coaches we've lost to (and won against) especially in terms of HC experience. Spurrier (hate him or not) is one of the best coaches coaching. Our coaches are relatively young and doing better than great with all things considered. I'm confident as well they all appreciate the value of a grade-a OL.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Forget Danny for a minute. Saban is today's master and he

Sep 15, 2014, 6:39 PM

Does it the same way. It's 25 years post-Danny but ole Saban builds it all around the line of scrimmages and he has trophies to show for it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The foundation is the line on both sides of the ball.

Sep 15, 2014, 6:45 PM

Everything else is built on that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can only guess Saban's ol commits would not be turned away

Sep 15, 2014, 6:46 PM [ in reply to Forget Danny for a minute. Saban is today's master and he ]

by Dabo. 2015 class has bama # 1 and CU # 2 so it seems they are successfully trying to bridge that gap.

Sep 15, 2014, 6:40 PM [ in reply to I cannot imagine the triple option with those players either ]

Do the really exceptional coaches start winning big immediately? Spurrier won the ACC at Duke about 26 years ago and took Duke into Tennessee and beat the Vols. I think he's 69 now so he did that at effin' Duke when he was 43.

Re: I cannot imagine the triple option with those players either

Sep 15, 2014, 11:17 PM [ in reply to I cannot imagine the triple option with those players either ]

Danny took Arkansas to the SEC Championship game and if his QB doesn't literally set the ball on the ground they more than likely would have won it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OK. When Danny Ford was coach, I use to say, "Dear Lord,

Sep 15, 2014, 6:43 PM

if we only had a passing attack. If we could only complete a 10 yard pass consistently"

Well, now we can, so I say, "Dear Lord, if we only had a powerful O line and running back."

But, as low scoring as the offense was under Ford, I knew that if we could score 20 points, we would win the game because of our defense.

There is no better feeling than watching the Tigers force 3 and out repeatedly. Watching the O line shove the defense back while the back pops through a crease. Seeing their defense totally demoralized by the 4th quarter. That is power football, and it never goes out of style.

With respect to Ford's offense, it was simple:
Here we come. All you have to do is stop us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Recruitin, Coachin, and the trenches is where it all starts

Sep 15, 2014, 6:53 PM

Then decent skill players can succeed.

a sports show with NFL coaches. One of the coaches said they loved getting players from Clemson for two reasons:

1. They were in excellent physical condition
2. They knew the fundamentals

A BIG reason is Spurrier. As much as I dislike him and his arrogant self, I believe he is the best college coach, coaching today. I believe if he had been on our sidelines for the Georgia game we would have won that game. Spurrier isn't afraid to take a chance and throw it down field. That conservative play calling did us in at Georgia. I love Dabo, but right now I don't believe he's anywhere near the coach Spurrier is.

It would have been illegal for Clemson to have a decent defense and online with those players

Only teams that come close to that kind of talent are Reggie bush timeframe So Cal and maybe mark Ingram Julio jones timeframe Bama teams

How do we lose 5 in a row with the likes of cn, Sammy, nuk etc????
I'll tell you how.
Lattimore, Jeffrey, swearinger, Clowney, culliver, Ellington, quarles, sanders, shaw, Gilmore, Hampton type players. Those are all nfl'ers also and gave the chickens more firepower. And they always seemed to be ready to play. But there's a lag in the talent in Columbia this year and we have no excuses. Our staff is superior with the exception of spurriers play calling. With our recruiting classes upcoming we could and should surpass USC.

It is hard to lose 5 with those guys.

1) Don't teach the importance of playing your best on EACH and EVERY play.
2) It starts in the weight room. Will never work if that don't change as your list of great players show.
3) Lack of attention to details such as special teams.
4) Poor game day strategy.

Those with short memories forget that there were many questioning whether or not the game had passed Spurrier by when he lost to Dabo the first year (USCe's sixth loss in seven years). Spurrier has been at USCe for four years and not much for such a legend to show for it.
http://www.fitsnews.com/2008/11/26/dear-ball-coach-beat-clemson-or-resign/

Of course, with the firing of Bowden many recruits went elsewhere leaving Clemson with a shell of a recruiting class (12 signees). While there were some significant recruits in that class, the transition to a new coach often is not without its problems.

"Small 2009 signing class is catching up to Clemson
Lack of depth is taking a toll on Tigers"
http://www.goupstate.com/article/20111122/WIRE/111129904

The other big issue being the obligations to Tommy Bowden's contract hamstringing the ability to go after big name assistant coaches for a few years.

They do need to concentrate on getting more quality big guys for depth in the trenches, skill players can't fix all ills.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We've recruited good on the oline, we have an oline coach...
