Has the Iraq War only strengthened Islamist extremists?
Jun 11, 2014, 8:12 PM

Man we have really fvcked this up I fear. Let me preface by noting I realize the Bush Admin put boots in Iraq, and the Obama Admin took them out. Today, Iraq is in worse shape than it has ever been. Reports today said 800 extremists overtook 30,000 Iraqis, including police and military, stealing over $400M from city banks. I believe that money cannot be used outside of Iraq, but it will be used to pay terrorists and recruit new ones.
Obama recently negotiated the exchange for 1 American by releasing 5 top commanders locked up at Gitmo. Now ISIS, Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams, is considered the richest terrorist group in middle eastern history. The Iraqis government is clearly not strong enough. I thought we were there to help build a government capable of defending against al-Qaeda. Clearly Obama took our troops out too early, and now more than likely more will be sent back. Please pray for a better tomorrow.

Every war we have won, we have stayed...

We still have troops in Germany and Japan. We still have a presence in Korea.
We built the largest military base in the history of the world in Iraq, intending to use it simialrly to Okinawa in maintaining a regional presence. Istead, we have abandoned it, and it will soon be in the hands of the Islamist.
But this thread doesn't belong here.

never should have gone into IRAQ in the first place. And we cant stay there forever. The Middle East will never change, and anyone who thought that a war with iraq would be quick and cheap with everlasting good results now has another thought coming.

This is just like Vietnam - we went in there and ........

lost some 50,000 soldiers and spent billions of dollars only to leave and then soon have the North Vietnamese take over the country - now Iraq is turning out the same way.
And as soon as we leave Afghanistan (even if some troops are left for the long term) the same thing will happen there.

I'm glad you went there 77, seriously.
On another separatist note, pro-Russian militants were seen toting a confederate flag this week. That's a huge mess that many Americans don't seem to give a shlt about.

There is no long term solution for the radicalism of Islam.
The only question is at what point does the free-world bear any responsibility to insure the basic freedoms and human rights across the world.

Or you could post your politics in the Lounge instead of Tiger Football. I enjoy a good political discussion and discussing how current foreign policy is destined to affect the future of the world, but many people don't. Regardless of what people enjoy, I'm sure that none of them came to the Tiger Football section of the board to talk about politics. Or at least very few.
That's why they took the time to divide the forums into numerous subsections. Tnetters can go to a specific section to see posts about a specific topic. If they don't want to be bombarded with anything political, they should be able to go to the Tiger Football forum and have that luxury.
Don't blame NortherTiger for posting his feelings about your post when most people would agree that this doesn't belong here irrespective of whether they agree with you or not.
Keep the politics in the Lounge and leave this for football.

I'm over it. It never bothered me that much to begin with actually. But the people that were trying to make that point were right. It certainly appeared as though you weren't understanding their point, so I decide to explain it. It's not like those 4 paragraphs took more than 2 minutes to type anyway.

Who gives a rat's **** about the rest of the world.! This is a Tiger Sports Site. The US has always tried to buy friends in the rest of the world. If you don't learn from history, you are destined to repeat it. ( Dr. Bolen's International Relations Class, Hist. 408, 1967.C.U.

I don't know if it has or not, but I feel pretty sick about what is going on over there. I have lost 8 good friends to war in Iraq, and I spent a year of my life over there in 2005-06.
We spent some time training the Iraqi Army when I was over there way back then, and they just didn't seem interested in their country's well being. They were lazy, unmotivated, and undisciplined. I had hoped they had changed since then, but every time I see extremists take another city, it just drives home the fact that they have not. It is sickening to see all of the blood and money we spent in their country being wasted because their army is full of cowards who would rather strip down and run away than stand and fight. The people in those cities looked to them for protection, but instead there were reports that many people were being beheaded in the streets.

The place was better off with Saddam Hussein. Sad but true, look at this mess. At least the place was manageable with him in power.
