Clemson Maryland 1978

May 1, 2020, 5:08 PM

Someone was referring earlier to the late great Jim Phillips best calls. I’m not prepared to say what my favorite was but the Clemson Maryland 1978 football game was a classic. Everyone rightfully mentions the 81 game In Chapel Hill as a classic since it was the first top 10 ACC matchup and It was on ABC. However, that Maryland game featured 2 top 15 teams and was for the ACC championship. Clemson was rarely on TV in those days and my dad only took us to 1 game a year. Therefore my earlier memories of Clemson football are almost entirely of Jim’s game calls. Clemson won a back and forth classic that November day. I remember being huddled around the radio with my dad. He got so nervous he went into the other room and I would yell updates to him when we scored. We couldn’t stop Charlie Wysoki and they couldn’t stop Fulller, Butler, and Clark. In those days you listened to the games on Saturday, ran quickly inside from church on Sundays so you could see the coach’s show and then went out and immolated your favorite players in a neighborhood game. I know that 78 game is available on You Tube now but I think I will just keep my memories of Jim’s calls that day. He was the best.

I have shared my memories Of that game with many people through the years. I was a senior. Lived off campus. But a lot of us gathered on campus around someone’s radio to listen to the game. Imagine that, this was the ACC championship game and was not even on television! It was also the senior year for Fuller and Butler. After the game anyone who was near their vehicle, which back then you could park much closer to school, Went out and started blowing the horn on their vehicle. I suspect you could hear the horns blowing in Pendleton! That game was the climax of our rise from 2-9 in fall of 75, 3-6-2 in 76, 8-2-1 in 77, and 11-1 in 78 including the gator bowl victory over Ohio State and Woody Hayes. I still miss Jim Phillips when I turn on the radio To listen to the games. Thanks for sharing your memory!

As an MD, I was at the hospital when Jim was brought to the hospital and to my department. There we many doctors there with him but, sadly, he didn't make it. Yes, he was the best Voice of the Tigers.

And that 78 game was a big turning point for Clemson. As was the Clemson-USuC game of 77. The picture of Jerry Butler (right wall) making the killer catch at Mac's was given to Mac by me over 20 years ago.

Fond memories..........................

This game in '78 is the one and only time that I have ever been to College Park,Maryland since I started going to Clemson games in '77.Definitely ranked up close to the top as one of the most memorable games during my time going in that it was the Tigers first ACC Title since 1967.

Waved that 1st Orange Cotton 3’ x 5’ PAW at that game (took it & pole on plane)..

1978 was it’s 2nd year waved home & away since bought it in 1977 and retired it in 1992.

Certain film replays from that game show it waving left & right and up & down on a two-part collapsible aluminum pole. Geez, my arms & shoulders got tired.

Saying, 15 years of carrying it into stadiums all over the SE and only once was it taken from me (momentarily at Notre Dame by a student who grabbed it unexpectedly in the stadium in wild 4th quarter, who’s blood is still on it).

Go TiGERS..ROCK!

I was at the game in College Park and when I got home my father told me about Jim's call. He said there was a several minute silence after, "Dwight Clark over the middle, he's got it and he's off to the races"...then, "And the kick for the extra point is good!"

I will never forget it either. I was 8 and we had a youth Church trip from Kingstree to Riverbanks ZOO. I can remember a lot of the dads with a radio sitting in back of church bus with back door open and them all standing around back of bus listening to game.

Those radio days were great. I can remember sometime our little radio would not pick things up good when we out in field on dove shoot so my dad would make us go back to truck while everybody was getting their limit. Loved my tigers but I wanted to shoot some doves too!!

Dove hunts and listening Jim Phillips are some of greatest memories of wonderful times with my dad

Great memory, but bittersweet. Breaks in the game had reports of the murder suicides in Guyana.

Finally, Tigs overcame the Tobacco Road top to bottom bias and started something big. In my college years, 1971 through 1975, we were abysmal in basketball (save trader Tates) and chasing decency in football. Best season was 1974, where we went 7-4 and had about 50 points more score against us than we scored. In 1975 we lost to the poultry 56-20, and something changed. We've never been awful in football since. But I never thought when we got our heads beat in by any SEC team, we'd ever start beating them and the whole country. Go Tigers!

If anyone has a copy of the Saturday Afternoon Fever Album based on the ‘78 season the locker room celebration and Charley Pell’s speech will raise the hair on your neck. I believe that he was the greatest motivational speaker we ever had as a coach. Would love to get a digital copy of that album.

with Jim. Without looking it up, I seem to remember Rex Varn had a pick. Could have a pick 6.

I remember Jim making a snarky comment about the Gamecocks at the end of the game. I wish I could remember what he said. It was out of character for Jim, but dead on.

realize that Clemson football could be really, really good again on the national level. And Charlie Wysocki was a #### of a football player. Too bad how things turned out for him.
