From nail biters to blowouts...

Jan 12, 2021, 8:55 AM

The combined margin of victory in the '15,'16, and '17 national championship games was 12 points.

The last three have been blowouts: '18,'19, and '20 combined margin is 73 points.

Does this demonstrate how quickly college football has become all about offense at the championship level?

Or, is there another explanation?

The last three have been a lot about the Big Mo.

Momentum in a football game is not measurable as a stat, but it exists as surely as Gatorade baths at the end for the winner. In the last 3 games, one team got rolling with momentum, and it became like a snow avalanche roaring down the hill.

But, and some of our fans will want to censure me for saying it, I also believe that in all three cases, the best team won the game, and would still have won even if the games were closer. (Yes, that means that LSU's 2019 "Best Team Money Can Buy" was in fact better than us. Deal with it.)
