For you math nerds, how is it mathematically possible

Oct 19, 2020, 11:36 AM

To turn over the ball twice and still score 73 points?

That would depend on how many times the other team turns it over.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

I work with a GT grad - he said 5 plays decided the game...

Oct 19, 2020, 12:45 PM

if 5 of our scoring plays had been turnovers that GT had returned for a TD...they would have won.

I asked if he had an equation for this that he uses after each game.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, it is quite easy

Oct 19, 2020, 12:45 PM

You see, one needs to only take what the potential score could have been, which is 223, and then divide by 2 since the starters were out at half. This give you 111.5. Now, you divide this by 2 and that gives you 55.75 ( per qtr score possibility with other than first string playing).

Once you have those numbers, then you can determine turn over points probability, which in this case is 52 (1st half pts) divided by 21 (2nd half pts) which gives you 2.48. Multiply 2.48 by 4 and that gives you 9.90. Now, 223 (potential points) divided by 9.90 gives you 22.53 multiplied by 4 and you have 90.12, then subtract 17.12 and that gives you 73.

73 total points is what Clemson score. Easy Peasy.

Short Form"

223/2 = 111.5/2 = 55.75
52/21 = 2.48*4 = 9.90
223/9.90 = 22.53*4 = 90.12-17.12 = 73

Re: For you math nerds, how is it mathematically possible

I did some quick calculus with some differential equations thrown in.

13 possessions: 2 turnovers, 10 TDs, 1 FG = 73 points.

That is one way it is mathematically possible. (At least that is what my computer told me.)

Re: For you math nerds, how is it mathematically possible

Oct 19, 2020, 2:06 PM

As a former math teacher, the equation lacks all the necessary variables. 73 points is 10 touchdowns and 1 FG, so that is 11 possessions. We lost 2 possessions to turnovers so that is 13 possessions. We punted 4 times so that is 17 possessions, but countered with 3 takeaways which gives us a total of 20 total possessions in the game. We scored on 11 of 20 possessions, so (7 x 10) + 3= 73!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One problem with that math

Oct 19, 2020, 2:58 PM

the takeaways weren't necessarily added possessions, because they could have resulted in punts or scores

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: One problem with that math

Oct 19, 2020, 4:36 PM

Right.

The takeaways are actually factored into the GT # of possessions, not ours.

Gotta get your Assets and Liabilities in the correct columns.
