Entertaining in Savannah.

Feb 10, 2017, 12:27 PM

I am going to be in Savannah Fri, Sat, and Sunday (2/17-19). I will be with my bride of 22 years and we have never been to Savannah before.
We enjoy a variety of food including seafood, pasta, bbq, burgers. I make a pretty mean pecan pie from an old family recipe, so I wouldn't mind to see how I stack up.

Also, any tips on MUST SEE places would be appreciated.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Two places I'd definitely recommend...

Feb 10, 2017, 12:36 PM

Joe's Homemade Cafe and Cotton & Rye.

Sandfly BBQ is pretty good too. Get the "hog wild" platter.

dont get suckered in to paula deans. its good but overrated

Feb 10, 2017, 12:55 PM

and overpriced.

i reccommend a ghost or history walking tour in the evening. lots of fun and informative, especially if you have a good guide.

i also recommend taking the 30/40 minute drive to Hilton Head and going to harbortown golf course and light house. beautiful golf course with some awesome views

Don't do Paula Deen's as it's nothing special plus a long wait in line with all the tourists. Mrs. Wilkes dining room is an old favorite and the Pirates House used to be one of the most famous but I haven't been there in a long time. Lots of great places to eat in Savannah.

Feb 10, 2017, 1:07 PM

Oh and do drive out to Tybee island, just a few minutes and nice light house.

I hate everything about Hilton head, traffic is horrible, just you and a million Yankees.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Entertaining in Savannah.

Feb 10, 2017, 1:16 PM

Traffic in Hilton Head will be a complete non issue this time of year... Like most times of year except Saturdays going on/off the island in the tourist season.
Eat at lowcountry backyard if you make it there.

Feb 10, 2017, 1:29 PM

You think so? I live near there and I hate it all the time but maybe it's just me. I remember Hilton Head when there was nothing there but the William Hilton inn which was a Motel and there was nothing else there but 1 gas station. I'm old and I guess I just don't like what is called progress.... a string of strip shopping centers. I know that folk who play golf do love it there.

Re: Entertaining in Savannah.

Feb 10, 2017, 4:26 PM

I guess it depends a bit on your definition of traffic. My parents have actually lived there since the early 80s.
It's definitely grown a ridiculous amount, especially Bluffton, but I've rarely gotten stuck in any kind of stop & go traffic and in the off season it should be a non issue.

Hire a local for a private walking tour.

Feb 10, 2017, 1:06 PM

Avoid the bus/trolley tours. A private tour is so much more informative and intimate. Best possible thing you could do in Savannah.

Feb 10, 2017, 1:08 PM

Sav is pretty easy to navigate. Start at River St and walk up the perpindicular streets checking out the homes and parks.

Enjoy!

Feb 10, 2017, 5:33 PM

Savannah is a very walkable city, designed around many parks. Definitely do your own "walking tour" and check out the many parks. Most of them have monuments and gardens and are very well maintained. Check out River Street as well.

There are many shops and restaurants to check out throughout the city, as they cater to tourists.

I would avoid The Lady and Sons, Paula Deen's restaurant. It is a long wait for Cracker Barrel food/ambiance at about four times the price. Not worth it at all.

Walk down river Street. The steps to get there are old and very steep and the street is cobblestone, so consider your better half's footwear when you go. Instead of one big meal while your I the waterfront, stop in on the local eateries and have one unique appetizer (we also enjoy it with an adult beverage) per stop and move to the next one. We really enjoy doing this wherever we visit. We also enjoy going to dueling pianos for some entertainment, but we still like to party. Across the street from the is a comedy tour club the may have something that interests you. We saw a hypnotist there one night. I don't remember what happened though but I've been hiking my leg on hydrants ever since. Have fun... Use cash if you can... Count your change. You can tmail if you have any other questions.

VIC's on Waterfront & The Chart House.

Feb 10, 2017, 8:09 PM

Vic's can be entered from two sides (upper side from street or down below near River)..

And The Chart House is in 150+ year old multi-level building one block or so over from river and has both brick & stone interior.

Thanks for the responses...

Feb 11, 2017, 10:30 AM

I am always impressed by the responses here on Tigernet for this type of information.
I have asked this question before when traveling to other cities and have always received great suggestions. It looks like I won't be disappointed this time either. One thing I know for sure is that Tiger Fans know good food and good football. As can be seen by our awesome tailgating scene on gamedays.

The burnt ends at Wiley's sound good. I've always wanted to try them.
Pink House sounds like a very nice experience.
Vics sounds like a winner.
Crab shack sounds like good food and a good time.
The brunch place sounds great as well.
So many suggestions but I like the idea that was mentioned to have an appetizer and a drink and then move on to the next place. Sounds fun.
Thanks to all.
