Dumbest trade ever?

Mar 16, 2020, 2:38 PM

This is ridiculous...Houston trades Hopkins, the number 4 receiver last year per Athlon, for Johnson, the number 18th RB... While they already have the number 20 RB in Miller on the roster...AND, the next best receiver on the team is number 29 Fuller!!!

So, to get this straight...they traded the fourth best WR for the 18th best RB, while they only have the 28th best WR left, and they already had the 20th best RB!

I know that stats can change when a player changes teams, but now, the Texans HAVE to draft a high WR this draft to replace Hopkins (Higgins is ready) and they need to figure which mediocre RB to keep.

Always comes down to money. Houston just cleared like 18mil/year in salary with that trade. An this being a deep wideouts draft, I imagine they think they can find a replacement for value in later rounds.

Big fan of Nuk but one wideout won’t win you a Super Bowl.

Not having a really good WR will prevent you from making the playoffs, let alone the Super Bowl. Offense is pass driven in the NFL for years now. One great one may not win it for you without other pieces, but a team full of pieces without a great receiver (be it TE or slot, etc.) will never sniff success. This stands as one of the most confusing trades ever. A few weeks ago, the talk was Sammy joining Nuk in Texas and now this?????

wrong Nuk had only $12.5 million; Johnson $11.2 million

so only a little over 1 million difference per cbs

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/texans-trade-deandre-hopkins-to-cardinals-for-david-johnson-and-draft-picks-per-reports/

Heres some quotes:

Hopkins carries completely non-guaranteed base salaries of $12.5 million, $13.5 million, and $13.9 million over the next three years

David Johnson is heading into the second year of the three-year, $39 million extension he signed with the Cardinals. He will draw a base salary of $10.2 million and carry a cap hit of nearly $11.2 million next season. The Texans are reportedly taking on his entire salary, which means they will now be paying more money to the running back position than almost any team in the NFL.

All in all, the Cardinals are massively upgrading their offense at very little cost, while the Texans sacrificed one of the NFL's best players for an unnecessary addition at one of the league's least valuable positions, and did so while receiving only a second-round pick in return.

Maybe #2, behind Minnesota's acquisition of Herschel Walker.

Dallas built an entire Super Bowl franchise out of that one trade.

They didn't trade Nuk because they thought David Johnson was a better player. This trade is all about salary. The 2nd round draft pick also helps, but it's mostly about the salary. I read that Nuk was also wanting to redo his contract for more money as well which only made the salary need increase.

They'll certainly not find another receiver of his caliber anytime soon, but they have a ton of other needs on the team where the savings in salary will assist in addressing.

It can certainly be debated whether or not freeing up the salary is worth more than Nuk as a player. However, the trade wasn't made because Houston decided they just had to have David Johnson.

I understand all of that...but a high pick of a WR in the first round will not save much in salary (salary negotiations and bonuses for first round players are high). The other part that makes no sense is the pick of a RB that is comparable to what you already have. Why not OLs? It does not look like the needs of the team were addressed, just a temporary cut in salary.
